"Lola, I brought you some food, yummy chocolate cupcakes with colorful sprinkles, Andrea baked them."
"Lola, I brought some toys, we can play the princess game with them."
"Lola, Giffy the big fat Gorilla is here, he wants to cuddle with you."
"Lola, want to play a game of hide and seek?" James asked me, a big smile spreading on his face. Unlike mine, I look like a sad puppy.
I didn't want to leave or do anything except stay in bed. I wasn't sick. My cheeks were now stained in tears. I don't know who this boy is and he only came upto me. It's been a week since I've started living in the orphanage, a place for kids who don't have their parents to look after them. My parents never made it out of the fire, the firemen couldn't get them out because they're dead. Even a five year old like myself knew what the word 'dead' meant. I learnt when people die, you don't see them ever again. That's the reason I'm crying, because I won't have them feeding me food, brushing my hair, protecting me from ugly creepy bugs, or sing me songs to sleep or even tell me bedtime stories.
I busted into tears again, startling James again. He looked panicked like he didn't know what to do.
"Don't cry, pwease." He begged, "oh no, you're making me cry now."
So now we ended up crying together. I don't know why he was crying but I know I'm crying for myself. The door busted open and we both paused. Well mostly him because he was fake crying.
"What's going on in here?" Some girl asked, "we can't play with our Barbie dolls, she's going to marry Ken."
James stopped crying, "then play somewhere else."
"We can't, they're about to..." She didn't get to finish what she wanted to say because James went straight ahead and slammed the door on them.
"We're telling Andrea on you." She tattled at us behind the door.
"We don't care, they're just some stupid toys." James yelled at them, "right Lola?"
I moaned. I stilled cried and he still tried to get me to stop and play with him. Out of everyone in the orphanage, he chose to play with me. I didn't know why but all I knew was that he didn't stop. He refused to until he got what he wanted.
"Want to hear a funny joke?"
I made no move but I listened anyway. Dad always joked around acting all goofy and silly so I bet this boy wouldn't be any good as him either way. I looked him as he made a thinking face, like Winnie the Pooh way of thinking with the hand tapping against his head.
He snapped his fingers, "I got one, why are frogs always happy?"
I stopped crying, "I don't know."
"They munch on whatever bugs them so much, get it?" He said which made my crying face turn the other way. He gasped when I pulled a smiled.
"Yay, I did it, let's do another one."
He made the same thinking face, "what do you call a pony that coughs a lot?"
"I don't know." I repeated.
"A tiny hoarse."
That wasn't funny.
"Okay, my turn now." I demanded, feeling like sharing my jokes, "knock, knock!"
"Whose there?"
"Who!"
"Who, who?"
