Lakin
We returned to school, and they made adjustments for Mia. She needed special attention to help her with her schoolwork. She could still do the work but needed guidance, which Michael took care of for her.
I showed her around to ease her mind. I didn't want her scared, and I didn't want anyone to mess with her. Plus, I figure we could stop by to see Uncle Nathan since he was getting the boys settled with Noah.
After our excursion, we went to see Nathan. I walked in. "Is anyone home?" I yelled.
"Yeah, I'll be right there!" Marshall yelled back. I coaxed Mia in as they all came to greet us.
She saw Nathan, and her face lit up. "Hi, Nathan!"
"Hi, Mia," he smiled.
She ran and hugged Nathan. "How are you doing, sweetheart?"
She let go of him, "I'm okay. Scared," she shrugged.
"It is, but Lakin will help you," Nathan reassured her.
"Oh, I know. Lakin is awesome," she said enthusiastically. She jumped on me, throwing her arms around me, making them laugh.
Usually, I would push people off me but not Mia. I loved that she was learning to be more affectionate with me.
She let go of her death grip, and we all talked. She became so animated as she spoke to Nathan, Noah, and the boys. They laughed and smiled, which warmed my heart. If there was one thing about my family, they knew how to be caring with people they loved.
After a while, Mia got tired, so I took her home. It was normal. We just dealt with it.
I got her settled and was about to leave when she stopped me.
"Stay with me," she pleaded.
"Okay, I'll stay," I reassured her as I walked over, climbing into her bed. She snuggled up to me, and I held her. That was all I needed.
Luna
After getting settled, I checked out around campus. Being around, everyone made me realize that I couldn't hold on to anyone, even if I tried. Maybe they were all right. Perhaps this was karma biting me in the ass for acting the way I did and dressing how I did. Desperation doesn't look good on anyone.
I looked into windows until I came to a pet shop. They had puppies and kittens. They were adorable. I wish I could take one home, but if I got a pet, it would be adoption.
As I tapped on the window and one of them pawed at it, I talked to it. At least, this little guy liked me.
"Cute, aren't they?" Someone asked in my ear.
I turned to face Major.
I stood up and looked at him, "Yeah, I always feel bad for the little buggers. They want someone to take them home and love them," I said as his brows furrowed. "But hey, we can't always get what we want, right?"
"Luna," Major said.
"Major, it's fine. My family has been telling me for years to clean up my act. You told me. I just chose not to listen." I shrugged.
"Luna, I didn't mean to say what I said. It was impulsive, but that's because you drive me crazy, yet it scared me. The books you saw me buying was to help me get you back," he explained.
"Why?" I looked at him, confused.
"Because I screwed up, and I want you back." He reached up and touched the side of my face gently with his hand. "Please give me another chance."
I furrowed my brows at him. I reached up and removed his hand. "I can't."
"Why not?" Major asked with concern.
"Because I don't want my heart broken any more than it already is," I said to him. Stay strong, Luna. Don't falter. I walked by him and went home. Major broke my heart, and I'm still recovering from it. I can't deal with another blow because of his indecisiveness. It wasn't fair.
I got home and saw Dad and Nixon.
"Luna?" Dad said to me.
I walked over to them.
"You okay?" Dad asked.
"Yeah, just another run-in with Major," I sighed.
"What did he want?" Nixon asked.
"To give him another chance. I told him no," I said firmly.
"What? Why not?" Nixon asked me.
"Because I don't need him to break my heart again," I said, looking at him strangely.
"Because he's a tool and that's what tools do. Look at your dad, for example," he said, pointing at Dad, who gave him a look. "He was a complete tool with your ma. I mean, he told some chick that he was in a maybe relationship. If that doesn't scream tool, then I don't know what does."
"You're a big help. Care to throw me under the bus more," Dad asked him.
"Well, there were all the times she gave you back the promise ring you gave her," he added.
"Shut it, Nix, you're not helping," Dad snapped.
"Well, you asked if there were any more times you want me to throw you under the bus, so I thought you wanted her to know," he shrugged.
Just then, Nolan came in. "Can someone explain to me why Major is blubbering like an idiot?"
"That would be your favorite niece's fault," Nixon pointed at me.
Nolan looked at me. "What did you do?"
"I just told him I didn't want another broken heart," I said emphatically.
"Oh, so you took his heart and stomp all over it," Nolan huffed.
"What? No! And whose side are you on anyway," I asked him.
"The one whose heart is a bloody mess," he said with a look. "Poor Major is all depressed now, no thanks to you and your womanly ways. Typical women, always crushing a guy's soul with no intention of loving him," he said dramatically.
At first, it took me back, but then something hit me. Ooh, those dirty sneaks, "Seriously?"
He looked at Dad and Nixon. "Too much?"
"Yep," they gestured and nodded.
"Oops, my bad," Nolan said.
I looked at them, "I get what all of you are trying to do, but I'm not just going to go running back to Major, then turn around, and he crushes me again. If he says he loves me as Major does, then he'll prove it. Isn't that what Ma did so you would get your head out of your ass?" I asked Dad.
He sighed. "Pretty much. Your mom broke up with me to get me to see how much I wanted to be with her." He looked at Nixon and Nolan. "She's right. He needs to fight for her."
"Good luck, Major. He will need it for this one," Nixon said as Nolan and Dad looked at him. "What? At least, I got the easy kid out of them."
"Since when? Last time I checked, Larkin is the least easy kid Nash has," Nolan said to him.
Just then, Larkin and Maverick walked in and looked at us.
"Take a picture it will last longer," Larkin told everyone as we all looked at her.
"Gee, I wonder where she heard that from," Nixon asked as he looked at Dad, who shrugged.
If Major truly meant what he said, he would prove it. No games, no indecisiveness, just proof. I deserved that.
