Today, Luna and Major were getting married, and we dressed in beach casual. Thank God, for once, Luna was the only one that used her brain and let us be comfortable. I hated suits.
Luna was wearing a simple white gown, and Major was wearing a white button shirt and khakis. We were all barefoot, best feeling ever.
We all made our way to our spots as Dad escorted Luna to Major. He handed off Luna to Major then took his seat.
"Dearly beloved, it gathers us here today because for once, these two finally got it right and legal. It only took Luna and Major three times to get it right," Nixon said as we all looked around, whistling.
"That goes to prove you should have listened to me because I'm the only one to make sure you get married. Now that we know this marriage will be real, we can proceed. Anyway, let's cut to the chase, do you runaway bride take runaway groom to be your husband?" Nixon asked Luna.
"I do." Luna rolled her eyes.
"And do you runaway groom take runaway bride to be your wife?" Nixon asked Major.
"Yes," Major said, not flinching.
"Good because this is your last chance. The next step is death. Ask Grammy," Nixon told them as they looked at him, surprised.
"It's true. Granddad lasted until he couldn't deal anymore." He shrugged as we all sighed.
"Anyway, now smooches," he told them as they looked at him, confused.
"That means kiss you twits since you're now legally married," he said with a look.
They shook their heads, and Major pulled Luna into a kiss. That was the thing, Nixon might be a traditional minister, but at least he kept things interesting.
After he declared them husband and wife, we went to the reception.
Maverick got everyone's attention. "Excuse me; I have a few words to say." We all turned to him. "Major is my big brother, and for the longest time, he was unhappy while trying to make me happy. I know he and Luna had their issues, but I'm also glad he could find the happiness he truly deserves. Cheers!" Maverick toasted.
We toasted, and Lakin spoke, "Since we are speaking, I have a few words to say. Luna, you have come a long way from who you were. Major had a lot to do with that. Baby sister, we are so happy that you found someone that makes you happy. We wish for many more years of happiness for you both. Cheers!" Lakin toasted.
We toasted, then Uncle Nolan spoke.
"Lu, you are by far the most amazing person we have ever met. The day you were born with the others, I knew you were special. I watched you grow into the beautiful woman you are today. I could not be more proud of you than I am right now. Major, please take care of her. Cheers!" Nolan toasted.
We toasted then; Finally, Dad said something, "Baby girl, I got to say, seeing you happy makes me happy. I watched you grow so much and change that we could not be prouder of you than we are right now. The day you kids were born was one of the happiest days of our lives. Major, I am giving you one of my baby girls to take care of now. Cherish her always. Cheers!"
We all toasted then ate. I have to say this wedding was a lot more relaxed than we planned. It was perfect.
Then came the first dance. Luna and Major got up and danced. The way Major danced with her, I knew it meant them to be together. Once they finished, Dad took her hand and led her to the floor. He danced with her as he did with our other sisters.
Ma walked over to Major and said, "Major, I know I'm not your mother, but I would love it if I could dance with you."
Major looked at her as a smile grew upon his face. "I would love that."
She smiled and took his hand, leading him out onto the dance floor. Luna may have gotten her guy, but Major got a mother.
When they finished their dances, we all joined them on the dance floor. Today was a good day. The weather was excellent, and we all had a great time. It was nice to see my sisters happy.
As we enjoyed the reception, we knew in two weeks, Michael marries Lyric. Then a month later, Piper and I would head down the aisle.
As we danced and enjoyed each other, what we weren't aware of was what to come. It would be a moment that would change all of us. For now, we were blissfully unaware of what would impact us.
They say in the greatest challenge of life comes to love. It would be a challenge that throws the Grays and Harpers together in a way no one would imagine.
