Luna
Uncle Nolan stuck around for a few days to help Major and me. He got a phone call from Aunt Brook, who raised hell, having to deal with Beau and Brody. Yep, Uncle Nolan would catch hell when he got home. It sucks to be him.
I got ready for my date with Major, which I was still unsure about with him. Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, well, you're a tool because there is no fooling me twice. I'm a Gray, not an idiot.
I finished up and came downstairs to find Major waiting for me. I walked over to Major.
"Ready," he asked. I nodded as we left.
Since the weather was still decent, we walked to a local diner. We walked in and took a seat at a booth. A waitress came over and took our orders then left.
"I'm happy you agreed to go out with me. Luna, I know I screwed up, but I swear, I will make things right this time," he said sincerely.
"Major, you hurt me. You've made me feel more insecure than before. You remind me of my dad. My ma became more insecure because of him," I sighed.
"I know, but it's like my brain checks out with you," he reasoned.
"That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard come out of your mouth," I said with a look.
"It's the truth. All guys have this thing with them. When they get a girl, they completely screw things up. I think there's something built into us, that causes it," he shrugged.
I shook my head and rolled my eyes.
"I'm in love with you. It scares the hell out of me," he confessed.
"Like it doesn't with me? Major, love shouldn't be scary. It should be wonderful," I reasoned.
"Yeah, well, when you lose people you love, it's hard not to think it won't happen again," he sighed.
I sat there and looked at him. It all made sense. It wasn't about me. It was the fact that he lost his parents. When you lose someone you love dearly, you think everyone will leave after that.
I watch Lyric suffer after Daniel died. I watched my Grammy and Grandpa mourn when grandad died. Grief can consume you if you let it.
"Major, I understand you're afraid, but if you don't let someone in to love you and keep pushing them away, you will miss out. The hardest thing you can ever do is open yourself up to being vulnerable," I explained.
"Where did you hear that? Did you read it somewhere?" Major asked.
"No, I watched my family go through it," I said to him.
He looked at me.
"I watched Lyric deal with a broken heart after Daniel. I watched my Grammy deal with one. I watched my grandpa cry. To love someone that intense and lose them, it's crushing, but it's life. The most important aspect is going on and not letting it destroy you," I reasoned.
He got up from his seat, and I watched as he moved over to my side and slid in next to me. He turned to me as I looked at him. Then he leaned, and before he did anything, someone interrupted us.
We both stopped and turned to see some girl standing there.
"Hey, Major," the girl greeted him.
"Hi Maxie," he said back to her.
I just sat there.
"We're still on for Friday night, right?" Maxie asked.
Before he answered, I pushed him out of the way. He got up, as did I.
"Luna," Major said.
"It's fine, Major. I've lost my appetite," I said to him. I turned to her. "You should stay." I faked a smile even though I was dying inside right now.
I walked away and back to the house but not before stopping by a bakery to get donuts and coffee. A girl with red hair handed me the box and the cup. I paid for it and took it home.
When I arrived, Uncle Nolan, Lex, and Piper met me.
"Why are you back so early?" Nolan asked me.
"Well, Major has plans for Friday night, which means tonight wasn't important," I replied.
"How do you know this?" Nolan asked me.
"A girl named Maxie mentioned it after interrupting our almost kiss, which may be a good thing. So, I got these delicious donuts and coffee. I figure a sugar coma should help," I said, faking happiness.
"Lu," Nolan said.
"It's fine. That proves that no matter what we do, something will always prevent us from working things out. Plus, I don't think dating is my thing. Now excuse me as I go dive into this unhealthy treat," I said, turning around and making my way to my room.
I watched a movie while I ate my donuts. I took a bite. They were okay, but Dad's donuts were so much better. I called him.
Luna? What's up, baby girl?
"Do you think you could send me some donuts?" I asked him.
Yes, but why?
"Because I miss your donuts, and I got these at the bakery," I answered.
Luna, the only time you want donuts is when you're upset.
"I'm fine. Uncle Nolan is here," I sighed.
Yeah, that makes me feel a lot better. At least, he didn't get you arrested.
"Pft, that will not happen," I said.
He chuckled.
Luna, I'm probably not the best one to give you advice on love because God knows I've made my fair share of mistakes.
I heard Ma yell in the background. Really? Because I'm pretty sure you made a boatload!
How would you know? You don't remember most of them! Dad yelled.
That's because you all filled me in on what happened! Who the hell says they're in a maybe relationship? Ma yelled back.
I heard him groan.
I'm so going to beat the hell out of Nixon for that!
I laughed at them. My parents were something else.
Hang in there, Luna. I got to go. Love you.
He hung up. Dad was terrible with advice. I'm pretty sure the way I was going, I would be five hundred pounds if I kept eating donuts. I shrugged and ate another one.
As I watched a movie, my phone buzzed. I picked it up to see Major calling. I didn't want to hear Major's excuses. I mean, if you are dating someone, why tell me you're trying to fix us? It makes no sense. But then again, he's related to Maverick.
I think my siblings were lucky. They got people with at least their head on straight while I got one on the fence. Scratch that, I don't have anyone, just someone who is making me think he wants me, ugh.
I sat there as my phone kept always buzzing to where I finally turned it off. I was over tonight.
