Luna
School started, and it made me determined to get on with my life. I went to my first class; then, after class, I got a coffee. I stood at the counter, trying to decide what I wanted when I heard someone say, "The lady would like a vanilla cappuccino, and I would like a regular coffee."
The barista nodded, and I turned to see Major standing there.
"Thanks," I said.
"Sure," he said, smiling at me. The barista returned with our coffee, and Major paid for it. I picked it up and started to walk away. "Wait, Luna."
I stopped and turned to him.
"Would you like to join me for a coffee?" Major asked.
I looked at him and said, "Sure."
We walked towards a table and sat down. I set my books down and took a sip of my coffee.
"Would you like to go on a date with me?" He asked cautiously.
I sat there, not knowing what to say.
"It's just dinner and a movie. No funny business," Major assured me.
"Only dinner and a movie?" I looked at him cautiously.
"Yes," I answered.
"I guess dinner and a movie wouldn't hurt," I said casually. A smile curled up on Major's lips as mined. We talked for a bit before I got up to go home.
Dinner and a movie, huh? It was a start.
Lakin
I showed Mia her class and met with someone to help her. I turned and looked at her. "Mia, this is Mrs. Appleton. She will help you with your classes."
"But you'll be back, right," she asked anxiously.
"Always," I replied. I gave Mia a reassuring smile, and she hugged me. I didn't hesitate to hug her back.
She followed the helper inside the classroom. Mia was doing better. She just needed reassurance and love. It would take some time, but the doctors said she was making significant progress.
Will she be the same as she was? No, Derrick made sure of that. We were lucky she was alive. I was glad she was here.
I stood there, watching as she got situated.
"How is she?" Michael asked, walking up.
"Scared, but I assured her I would be back," I smiled as I looked at him.
"Good, I'm glad she has you," he said, smiling back.
We went to class and after I returned to Mia. She was excited to see me.
"Lakin! You came back!" She threw her arms around me, hugging me.
"Baby girl, I told you I would." I hugged her.
"You never let me down, Lakin," Mia said as she buried her head into my chest.
"And I never will," I assured her.
I helped her with her books. As we started to walk, I felt her slide her hand into mine. That was new. I looked at her, a bit surprised as she smiled at me, making me smile.
We went to the next class as Mrs. Appleton met us there. It's the same thing. Once she was in a routine, she would be fine. She just needed that extra reassurance.
After class, I picked her up. While I talk to Mrs. Appleton, I saw Marshall and waved him over.
He walked up, and Mia hugged him.
"Marshall! I missed you!" She said excitedly.
"I missed you too, Mia," Marshall said to her.
"Marshall? Can you take Mia for something to eat, and I'll be there in a minute?" I asked him.
"Sure thing Lake," he answered as he coaxed Mia to go with him.
Once they were out of earshot, I turned to Mrs. Appleton. "Well," I asked.
"She fined, but she's having some difficulties," Mrs. Appleton explained.
"Such as?" I asked.
"Such as the material seems more advanced for her. Lakin the problem with head trauma and suffering brain damage, people develop bigger issues. We can work with her but consider the fact; she will need a lot of help once you leave school," she explained.
"I understand, but I also understand someone did this to her. She was fine before everything, but someone decided they didn't like our sexual orientation. We were lucky she lived," I told her.
She looked at me with compassion.
"Then maybe you should look at securing her future when someone ripped it from her," she advised me.
"What do you mean?"
"The Crandall's have money. I understand people don't want to go after it because they want to move on, but since someone took it upon themselves to cause this, why not go after them?" Mrs. Appleton asked.
I looked at her. I knew she was right about Mia. Unfortunately, she wouldn't be able to finish school because of what happened. Derek took so much from her. He robbed her of things that she didn't understand.
I wanted to discuss it with Michael. She was his sister, and I didn't want to step on his toes. But this would also help with a caregiver to help her when I couldn't be there. Mainly because one day I would marry her. I wasn't sure about kids yet.
Sometimes we have to decide based on what's best for the other person in our lives. Mia was more important to me than having kids. I know people would think I'm selfish, but I have to consider the impact they would have on her.
I found Marshall and Mia sitting on a bench.
"Hi Lakin," she smiled.
"Hi, baby girl," I smiled back.
"I will get going," Marshall said before saying bye to Mia.
I held out my hand. "Ready?"
"Yep," she said, taking my hand and walking hand in hand with me. We went back to her house, and luckily Michael was home. I had Mia go into the other room.
"How was it?" He asked anxiously.
"Truthfully, she won't finish school. Mrs. Appleton said she struggled a lot. Michael, unfortunately, with the brain damage, the school will frustrate her," I explained.
He sighed. "I was afraid of that. He robbed Mia of so much."
"Mrs. Appleton suggested that we go after the Crandall's for restitution. It would help with a caregiver for Mia when we aren't around," I suggested.
"That's not a bad idea, Lakin; I'll contact an attorney," he said.
We heard Mia say, "Am I not allowed to go to school?"
We both turned to see her standing there. I walked over to her. "Baby girl too much happened. The school will add to it. We don't want you to struggle," I reasoned.
She furrowed her brows. "That isn't fair."
"Mia, we're doing what's best for you," I explained.
"But I know what's best for me!" We stood there, stunned. "I'm tired of people treating me like a child! I'm not a child! I am Mia. I am twenty. I deserve things like everyone else!" She yelled.
We stood there, shocked. It was the first time Mia showed anger like before.
"Please." She started to cry, and I wrapped my arms around her.
"Okay, Mia," I comforted her.
I looked at Michael, and he seemed as shocked as I was. Was it possible that the part damaged was a different area? The only way to find out was to take her to a neurologist. Maybe they could shed some answers on what was going on with Mia.
