Chapter 17

I ran towards Jace and hugged him. I closed my eyes and some tears escaped my eyes. I felt so stupid.

I was so afraid and if it wasn't for Alec I would have died. I looked over at Alec and I saw him staring at me.

The hug we shared was so amazing. I felt safe and relieved and I knew no matter what would happen Alec would be there. I wasn't worried anymore.

I gave him a small smile which he returned and I was mentally preparing myself for the lectures I was about to get.

I was the most afraid of Alec's.

Everyone came together and the one I didn't recognise was the tall dark skin coloured man. I have never seen him but I knew he was fighting among us.

Jace held me tight and smiled when the man came forward. He was staring at me and I still had no idea why. I did not know who he was and I started to feel a bit uncomfortable.

"Clary? I am Luke." He said and I smiled at him. Of course, he knew who I was. Everyone knew.

"Hey." I said softly and Jace let me go and looked at me. He looked furious and I honestly did not blame him for it.

"Clary, you can't do something like this again." He said to me in an angry way. I nodded and looked down. I felt so embarrassed.

What was I even thinking?

Alec was right. I was ruled by my emotions... That's how I came in this situation... I brought everyone into danger. That's all because of me.

Luke from whom I still was not familiar with let his hand rest on Jace's shoulder.

"It is alright. She knows." Luke said as Jace looked at him. Jace sighed and nodded and looked over at me. He pulled me into a hug. Luke saved me from being scolded. I already liked him, even though I didn't knew him personally.

"Don't ever leave me alone." He mumbled and I nodded and returned the hug. I held him tight and mumbled again "Sorry."

"Clary." Jace cleared his throat and I felt the awkwardness among us and Luke came a bit forward. What was going on?

"Remember I mentioned that we have a step-father." He said and I nodded and I realized that he was talking about Luke. I was shocked and hopefully I let Luke not feel uncomfortable because he was amazing. I know he was an amazing person. You could tell it from him.

"Luke is our step-father." He said and Luke looked at me and smiled. I gave him a smile too and hugged him, in order to thank him for today.

"Thank you for today." I said and I could see the surprised expression on Jace's face. He certainly did not expect me to hug Luke. Especially because it took me a long time to forgive our mother for abandoning me but Luke did nothing wrong. It surely will take time to get used to this and accept the fact that he will be the only father I will know and I was not going to ruin that.

"You are welcome, little one." He said and I smiled. We all walked back to the institute and as soon as we arrived I saw my mother waiting for us. She sighed relieved seeing me stand next to my brother and step-father and ran towards me and hugged me.

"Oh thank the Angel, you are okay." She said and held me tight. I smiled and hugged her too and I could see Alec's mother. She was totally not amused by this situation and I knew she was going to scold me and no one could help me out of this one. I saw her walking towards me and I pulled out of the hug.

"How dare you putting everyone in danger like that?!" She yelled at me and I looked down, too afraid to face her. I honestly understand now why the whole institute was scared of her. She was frightening.

"I am sorry." I said and I looked at her and she laughed in my face.

"You pathetic little girl!" She yelled and gave me a slap. I widened my eyes and let my hand rest on my cheek, which was now red because of Maryse.

"Maryse!" My mum screamed and pushed her away from me. Alec came closer as he saw that his mother was about to say something again.

"You can not touch her." He said and brought his mother inside. I looked at my mother and I started to cry softly.

She pulled me in a hug and Jace went inside after Maryse. God, I hope he was not going to make it worse because it was my fault. I literally brought the whole world into danger. I was the bad one her not Maryse.

I walked inside the institute together with Izzy and my parents. I saw Jace yelling at Maryse.

"How dare you slapping my sister?! Since the day she was born she was getting threatened by your brother-in-law!" Jace yelled and Maryse's eyes widened and I heard her gasp. I gasped in shock and quickly ran towards them.

"Jace. It is okay." I said and he shook his head. Why was he being so stubborn? I don't want to have this drama.

"No it is not okay and she needs to know that you are the victim, not her or any other shadow hunter here." Jace said throughout his teeth and glared at Maryse.

"For Alec's and Izzy's sake, I beg you stop." I whispered in Jace's ear and I saw his eyes go soft. I sighed relieved and we both walked away. I really needed to rest because I was so exhausted today.

When I got to my room I almost screamed when I saw a figure in my room but I soon realized it was Alec.

"Hey." I said with a smile on my face and he gave me a little smile. He walked towards me.

"Hey." He said and I was not really sure why he was here but I also did not mind him being here.

"You scared me today." He said and he cleared his throat. "I mean all of us." He quickly said and I laughed softly.

"Yeah and I am sorry for that." I apologised and he nodded. He came closer to me and our lips were just one inch away from each others. I started to breathe a bit heavier and I looked at Alec. He touched my cheeks with his hand and chuckled.

He came closer...

He backed away fast and looked at me. Confused I looked at him and as I realized that we almost kissed each other. Alec clenched his jaw and looked down. Why did he backed away....

"I can't do this." He said and with those words he rushed out of my room and slammed the door behind them. I flinched as I heard the bang and closed my eyes. I sighed and openend my eyes again.

What the hell just happened?
