I woke up to the smell of bacon and Veronica gone. I changed into a pair of worn jeans and a baby pink t-shirt and skipped down the stairs. Veronica had two plates set out, each with eggs and bacon. We sat down and dug in.
Veronica looked over what I was wearing, "Is that what you're wearing?"
I looked at her confused, "Yes?"
She sighed, "You can borrow one of my dresses."
I raised an eyebrow, "Dress?"
She nodded, "For church?"
I almost dropped my fork, "It's Sunday! How did I forget?"
She shook her head before heading up stairs. She returned in a light blue cotton dress with a floral pink dress in hand. She handed it to me and I left to change.
Once I was changed, we pulled our hair into buns and then walked to church.
We walked in the door near the back where I saw two familiar faces.
I waved to Johnny and Ponyboy. They both gave small smiles in return.
I grabbed Veronica's hand and pulled her to the seats in front of where they sat. She looked at me confused but still followed.
A minute later, Heather walked in with Anne on her hip. They both wore lavender dresses. Anne's thick hair was filled with her natural curls and Heather's was pulled into a bun similar to Veronica's and my own. She saw us and walked over to the empty seat to my side.
Anne was squirming so she sat her on the ground. Anne sat up after rolling around for a minute.
She held her arms out and reached for Heather, "Mama!"
Heather pulled her into her arms again.
Veronica raised an eyebrow, "Still calling you mama?"
Heather nodded, "She's only one, you can't expect her to know any different. Also, I've been considering making it official. I may be her legal guardian but they say it would be best to adopt her."
I nodded, "You might as well, considering that you're raising her."
She just nodded, Anne now resting her head against her shoulder.
The service started and we all put our focus to that.
Halfway through, Anne wanted to be put down again and before we could stop her, she had scooted herself completely under the pew. Heather dropped to her knees snd started reaching but Anne had already made it to the row behind our seats. I looked back and saw her sitting and staring at Pony and Johnny.
They both smiled when Anne did. She rolled onto her stomach and then crawled over to Johnny. She was pulling on his pant leg softly when he looked up with an unsure expression. I gave him a reassuring smile that he was fine. He smiled back and reached down, bringing Anne into his arms. Heather popped up beside me, "Where'd she-" she saw Johnny, "-Oh! Thank goodness!"
Johnny looked up, "This your kid?"
Heather spoke quietly to not disturb the service, "No, well, yes. Yes, she is."
Johnny smiled and held her out to Heather.
Anne gurgled through the whole transaction.
Heather held her for the remaining time but Johnny's smile stayed present.
Veronica and I left as soon as it was over because I was in charge of making dinner today for the three of us, today just Veronica and I, and asked Veronica to invite the boys. She said she'd leave an open invitation to bring their friends.
I got home and started on a roast and rolls, something I could easily feed a lot of people with.
