It was dark and late but I was still awake. The pounding of the rain and the claps of thunder made it almost impossible for me to fall asleep.
I rolled and adjusted myself again when I heard a knock downstairs.
My first instinct was to ignore it but then I worried that someone needed help.
I slipped on a light robe before heading downstairs, there was no way I would answer the door in just a flimsy nightgown.
I grabbed my switchblade before unlocking the door and slowly opening it.
When I saw it was Dally, I threw the door wide open.
"Dal? What're you doing here? What's wrong?"
He just smiled, "Hey, Doll. Would you mind me crashing here? Closest place."
I ushered him inside and turned on the light and that's when I got a good look at him.
A gasp escaped my lips but he just waved me off. He was soaking wet, had a split lip, and blood and bruises littered his face. I hated to admit it, but he still looked hot.
I took his hand and lead him upstairs to my bedroom. I told him to sit on the bed while I walked to the bathroom. I pulled the first aid kit from under the sink and went back to my bedroom.
I started with a wet wash cloth and wiped off most of the blood. It took a few minutes but soon it was all off. I used a dry wash cloth to dry his lip enough I could put the gel and a butterfly bandage on it to hold it closed.
"You gonna say anthing?" He asked, "You've been so quiet you're scaring me."
I sighed and looked down at him, "What happened?"
"I slashed Tim's tires again and a few members of his outfit caught up to me when they released me from the cooler."
"Are you okay?" I asked quietly.
He looked up, "Of course I'm okay. A little skin on skin never hurt anyone too bad."
"Why were you arrested?"
He seemed unbothered, "They thought I had something to do with that murder." My eyes widened so he clarified, "I didn't."
I shook my head softly, "Need an asprin?"
He shrugged, "Might help this stupid headache."
I went back to the bathroom and found them. I closed the medicine cabinet and was met with the mirror on the door. I didn't know I was crying until I saw the tears. I wiped the tears but it was too late, they weren't stopping. I decided to ignore them and just bring the aspirin to Dallas.
I handed him the pills but he didn't seem too worried about taking them, "What's wrong?"
I shook my head, "It's nothing."
He stood up, "If it were nothing, you wouldn't be crying. Now, tell me what's the matter."
I wiped the tears again, "I'm just worried."
He looked confused, "Worried? About what?"
"You, damnit!" I was close to yelling but held back so I wouldn't wake Anne. "You're gonna get yourself killed if you keep up like this! Doing stupid shit, just to do it! Just to piss people off! Well, right now, the only person you're pissing off is me. I don't want you to end up dead."
He looked taken aback, "Why would you care?"
I was all but furious now, "Because I care about you, you idiot!"
He stood up but his voice was still even, "I ain't gonna change how I am for a girl."
I took a breath and evened my own voice, "And I can't expect you to."
He looked at me then down at himself before he walked out the door. I heard his retreating footsteps and then the sound of the door slamming behind him and then only the rain.
What did I expect? I knew what Dallas Winston was like and that wouldn't magically change.
Anne started crying and I got up to get her. She stopped when she was in my arms.
I lied back down with Anne and the tears started falling silently.
What did I expect?
