I pulled him around the corner of the diner, "What was that all about?" The tension felt suffocating.
He shrugged but had a small smile on his face, "You get so worked up. It's kinda funny."
By now I was fuming.
He reached forward and pushed a piece of hair behind my ear. His voice was low, "You know, you're hot when you're angry."
I cocked an eyebrow, "Then I'm about to be the best looking broad you've ever seen."
He leaned in, "You already are." With that, he backed me against the wall and connected our lips, this time more sure than even after the party. The following moment seemed to last forever but I assumed it was only seconds. I was wrong.
Other than to catch our breathes, we only pulled away when someone cleared their throat.
We turned to see Bailey, smirking, "I came to check on you. You know, make sure Dally here wasn't already dead in a ditch considering you've been out here for almost half an hour."
It'd been that long?
Dallas pushed off the wall, "Time flies when you're enjoying yourself."
Now that I was no longer caged in by his arms, I stepped away from the wall and straightened my clothes.
"I'm sorry," I whispered to Bailey.
She just smiled at me, "You will be when I tell everyone what just happened."
My jaw dropped, "You wouldn't!"
She smiled, a glint of mischief in her eye, "Oh, but I would."
Dallas was up ahead but turned back to us, "I gotta head out. Take this for the bill." He handed me a bit of cash for his dinner and was off.
Bailey shrugged, "Guess only you have to endure the teasing when I tell them."
I sighed, time to face the music.
Almost immediatly after sitting down Bailey was talking, "No one was killing anyone. Instead I walked in on a make out session."
"Really?" Veronica asked with a smirk.
Steve handed Soda a dollar.
I looked between the two of them, "Were you really betting?"
Steve looked at me in disappointment, "I really thought you could kill him, kid."
I put the cash for mine and Dally's food on the table before grabbing Anne, "We gotta leave. Don't get into too much trouble."
Bailey was quick to shout back, "Don't get into anyone's pants!"
My face was hot before I was out the door.
We needed to get home, someone would be stopping by to see if I was fit to care for Anne. They came by when my father first left so I wasn't too worried.
I had enough time to clean the house before there was a knock at the door.
I lead the older man to our living room, "Good evening. I just need to ask you a series of questions to ensure you're fit to care for the child."
I smiled and nodded.
He looked down to his clipboard, "How old are you?"
"Eighteen."
He wrote down my answer, "How long has the child been in your care?"
"Around a year."
He scribbled it down, "Why are you requesting to change your guardianship to a parental one?"
I shrugged, "I'm the one raising her, I get mistaken for her mother frequently, and she's already calling me mama."
"Is there a man in the picture?"
"Excuse me?"
He looked up, "To ensure a stable income, protection, and a father figure. Even if you're not married, it helps to prove the child will have a stable home. Not many women can adopt without a partner."
I made a decision then and there, "My income is stable and I am plenty capable of protecting us, however, we have many close friends that are here for us."
He raised an eyebrow, "And one of them is a man?"
I rollled my eyes, "Yes."
He scribbled it down, "That's all I needed."
He continued to ask his questions and then left.
