It was early in the dark hours of the morning when she woke up to a sound, it was a loud sound and it came from her living room. It was soon followed by an all too familiar voice yelling out in pain; she glared into the darkness of her room and got out of bed. She stumbled out of her door to see all the lights on in the kitchen she grabbed her gun off of her desk and slowly creeper out to the source of the light. She turned the corner quickly, gun poised and ready to shoot, and saw Lifty sitting in a chair and eating an apple with both of his feet on the surface of her dark oak tabletop. He took a large bite of the apple and rudely said hello with a small wave.
She sighed angrily and set the gun on her counter, "Lifty, what do you think you're doing here?"
"Is that a trick question," he asked as he took another bite of the bright green apple.
"No, I want to know what you're doing here in these ungodly hours of the morning."
He raised the apple, slightly shook it in her direction, took another bite, chewed, then swallowed before saying, "I'm eating an apple, what does it look like?" to this she sighed angrily and rolled her eyes.
"You can just go breaking into people's houses, I can arrest you for that; Ya'know?"
He dint stop eating the apple and was almost to the core, "well I got hungry and didn't want to get caught stealing from MickyD's again." Sapphire stopped for a moment and comptemplated what he had just said to her.
"McDonald's?"
"Yeah, MickyD's."
She blinked again, be slower; "Mcdonald's."
He nodded slowly, "yeah, MickyD's."
Sapphire inhaled slowly then exhaled in a bust of anger, "get out! Get out of my house!"
She pointed angrily at the door and the now frightened raccoon leaped out of the chair and booked it for the door. He slammed it on his way out and she sat down at the chair he was sitting in; in frustration. There was a soft, warm, feeling on her back and she checked behind her to see he had left his green and black scarf. She grabbed it from behind her and set it on the table in front of her, she opened it and spread it out to see how long it was because it was the ungodly hours of the morning, she was tired, and she was in a curious mood. As soon as she finished measuring it's length, 5'3, she spotted a piece of paper underneath it. She grabbed it quickly in the hopes that he left his scarf on purpose but it turned out just to be a receipt he had left there. She picked it up and took a look at what he bought, flowers, chocolate, tea, and someonething that made her put the receipt down and sigh loudly for a minute while rubbing her temples. After a moment she grabbed the receipt again, being curious as to what else was on it. She spotted dark handwriting near the bottom and read it.
"1324 East Bunny Lane"
She stared for a moment, it was an address. Had he left this on purpose or by accident? She wondered what was at said address and decided it was police work. She went to her room and started her morning routine; it ended in her fixing her official officer cap on her head. She wiggled her ears after placing it on her head and grabbed the receipt on the way out of her house.
She repeated the address a few times as she opened her car door, she sat down and started it up. After about four minutes of waiting for it to heat up, there was a sound from the backseat; as if someone was back there. She slammed the car door open as soon as she heard it and pulled her gun out. She opened the backseat of her car and aimed the gun directly at..
"Veronica..?"
Veronica shook her head and seemed to smile through the rope gag.
"Who did this, did they hurt you?" Veronica shook her head no and Sapphire jumped into action, she helped Veronica onto the seat and she untied her.
Her sweet, honeysickle-like, voice came as soon as Sapphire pulled the gag out of her mouth, "It was that raccoon that you were talking about! I've been in here all night!"
"Calm down, Veronica. Are you ok? What raccoon?"
"I'm fine, they didn't abuse me at all. And that green raccoon, I think there might've been two, actually." she thought for a moment, "yes there were two, I remember now. One had a hat and the other one had a scarf."
"Lullaby Valley isn't that long of a drive, I'll take you home."
Veronica leaped out of the car and wrapped her arms around Sapphire, tears steamed down her eyes but she kept her voice steady, "no. I want to help you catch these... Things.."
She sobbed into Sapphires police outfit for a moment before stepping back and wiping her tears. Sapphire knew it was dangerous but also knew Veronica would not change her mind once it was made up. She sighed and nodded, "we'll head to the station to get you something proper to wear; so you don't get hurt."
Veronica wiped her eyes and cheeks once more before nodding slowly, "anything to catch those freaks."
Sapphire nodded slowly and helped Veronica into the passenger seat of her car, then she got into the driver side. She started up the car again and waited about 5 minutes before opening the garage door and pulling out, she waited in her driveway to make sure the door closed fully before she started driving towards the police station she worked at. During the ride, Veronica was surprisingly silent; Sapphire expected her to be ranting about dumb animals.
They pulled up to the large police station and sapphire marked in a spot that said it was reserved for her; she stopped the car and stepped out, then waited for Veronica. As soon as the doors were closed she locked the car repeatedly wither her wireless keys, this made Veronica smirk slightly.
After they had finally gotten Veronica fitted and gotten her some extra safety supplies, they both went back to the car to search Happy Tree Town for Lifty and Shifty, the two most known and mischievous raccoons.
About one hour into the drive, Veronica got bored and asked if they could hurry with the hunting. Sapphire told her they couldn't rush real work and Veronica suddenly "felt sick". Sapphire got surprised at her sudden sickness and turned the small vehicle towards her home in Lullaby Valley. After she dropped Veronica off at home, about two hours had passed and the sun was finally coming up. She set her mind to it and started driving the long hour back to Happy Tree Town, she was about ready to give up on the search and go home.
She made it back to Haply Tree Town on exactly the third hour after 5am. She drove slowly down the bumpy road on her way back and hit a particularly large bump, she stopped to check what she hit and saw a large bag. She walked over and opened it, revealing mounds of golden coins. She scooped the coins back into the bag and placed them in the back of her cruiser. She closed the door and got back in.
"So Sapphire, heard you have my brothers scarf," came a voice from the backseat.
"Idiot," she mumbled. "You just locked yourself in the backseat of my car."
Shifty tried to open the door then smacked someone, "bro you got us locked in a cop car."
"I told you not to close the door!"
"I thought you said 'close the door'!"
They started arguing about how dumb the other was and Sapphire rolled her eyes, she started moving the car but the brothers were to occupied to care. She started driving faster as she got back into town, matching the speed limit.
By then the brothers both had their arms crossed and were facing away from each other.
She pulled up to the police station and the two boys finally realized where they were at.
"Lifty, dude, what have we done?"
"We got ourselves fucking caught," Lifty sighed. Sapphire opened the door with her gun in hand and motioned for Shifty to get on the ground, he sighed loudly and obeyed. She cuffed him and pointed her gun at Lifty, then the ground; motioning for him to get out of the car. Lifty raised his hands and slid out of the car, "you just want me below you, hun."
Sapphire froze as blush consumed her purple furred face, she felt like she was petrified as Lifty jumped past her and grabbed his brother. He grabbed the keys from her and snapped her back into reality.
She shakily lifted the gun and pointed it straight at them; in a clam and steady, yet still slightly shaky, she mumbled "get down."
Lifty raided his hands above his head again but Shifty refused to, he held is position. He shook his head in resistance against her, she had no other choice and she knew it.
"Get on the ground," she yelled again as she watched Lifty get up and stand with his brother. "I will shoot if you don't get on the ground!" They kept their position and she cocked the gun, "it's my job as a police officer to keep this city safe, and if that means shooting one of you, or both of you, I will."
Shifty smiled, then laughed "shoot me then."
Sapphire stood, comptemplating if she should or shouldn't.
She took a deep breath and watched as Lifty fell to the ground, her ears rang like hell. She froze again and watched Shifty grab his falling brother. A loud scream emerged from Lifty as he grabbed the bullet wound on his arm, her breathing slowed "I warned you to.." she needed to sit down but ignored the faint feeling. "Get down.."
Shifty picked up his brother and ran as her vision blurred, he escaped into an alley and got his brother to safety. Sapphire stood in disbelief at herself for actually pulled the trigger as Lumpy rushed down the steps towards her.
"Sapphire, are you ok? I heard a gunshot," he cried as he placed his hands on her shoulders. Tears welled up in her eyes and slowly slid down her fuzzy cheeks as she stood in silence. "Sapphire?" he asked again, to no response.
It wasn't her first time shooting someone but she felt it might as well have been the last. She couldn't think right and understood she was having a panic attack; she actually shot him.
"I could have killed him," she said slowly as Lumpy picked her up like a bride and carried her inside. He set her down on the couch in the break room and sat in a chair across from it. She started frantically playing with her purple tail, a blank look clear on her face. The phrase "I could have killed him" reapeted itself in her head as she sat.
She felt more tears rush down her face as she heard something very faint, it was slightly ringing and very muffled.
Lumpy was calling Scar to tell her what happened but she only heard a muffled voice and silent ringing. It felt like forever as she sat on the leather couch, trying to gather her thoughts. After about an hour she had gathered herself and was wiping her watering eyes; again.
There was the sound of a door slamming open and it caught her attention; she looked up at her brother Scar who immediently rushed into her with loving arms. She grabbed him onto the couch and sobbed into his shoulder: even though this rarely happened he always knew exactly how to comfort her. After another long hour of soft shushing, crying, and warm hugs; Sapphire was feeling better about the incident. She took some deep breathes and hugged Scar one more time, "thank you, you always know exactly what to do."
He nodded, "I know."
She smiled and stood up, "I should get home."
Scar wouldn't have it, "I'll drive you."
"What? No, I can do it myself."
Scar bit his lip in frustration, "I'm taking you home and that's that."
She stormed out or the door, slamming it behind her; "I love you, Scar; but I do not need you to drive me half a mile!"
He growled and followed her, slamming the door just as hard. They started arguing and they made it to the front of the stairs leading out to the parking lot before Sapphire turned around and started yelling at her brother; as expected, he yelled back.
Little did either of them know, something was lurking in the shadows nearby; scoped and ready for fire.
"I'm done with crying," Sapphire yelled but it was drowned out by a loud bang that made her soft ears ring. There was something of a splatter and she watched as Scar grabbed his heart, there was a noticeable stain on the wall behind him. She rushed to him and held him in her arms. There was a moment of quiet before complete silence; she clenched her teeth as hard as she could in anger, knowing it was her fault.
"I.." she said as she held back tears. "Scar..?" she stared at his lifeless body and started begging for him to wake up even though she knew he was dead.
She took a deep breath and stood up, blood covering her hands. A song chorus came into her head at the perfect moment as she pulled her pistol and aimed it into the dark bushes where the first shot came from. The bush moved slightly and she put the gun back, then rushed to her car. She got in and turned it on; not waiting for it to heat up before she drove back to her house, her brothers body lay on the cold, hard, cement.
She pulled up and didn't bother to put her car in the garage before leaving it in the driveway and going inside. There she saw him, and she knew exactly what he was there for.
"Lifty, I spared your life why did your brother spare his?"
He smiled guitliy and showed her his bandaged arm, "I'm a quick healer, you see?"
"Don't change the subject, why did you have to kill my brother?" tears flooded to her eyes but she held them back as best she could, knowing tears would lose this battle.
"I didn't kill him."
"Your brother did."
"Yup."
"Don't brush his death off so easily."
"Yup."
Her eye twitched, "why did you two kill him?" she demanded.
Lifty stared her directly in the eyes, "he was in the way."
"The way of what? What was he in the way of," she demanded him to tell her but he kept mostly silent.
There was about two minutes of silence as they stared each other down, then he finally spoke; "you."
She couldn't handle it anymore, "cut the crap and tell me why your brother shot him!"
Lifty simply smiled and pulled out a pistol from somewhere on him; Sapphire pulled her pistol out and pointed it at his head. He dropped it on the floor, it had a scope on it and seemed modified from a normal pistol. She stared at it, "is that the murder weapon."
"Check the ammo."
She grabbed the gun and check the ammo, one of the small bullets had a piece of paper wrapped around it. She pulled it out and looked at it; she read it and stared in disbelief at Lifty.
"This is how you feel?" she asked slowly as her brain tried to comprehend everything that was happening that day. He swiftly walked over to her and stole a kiss off her lips before just as quickly leaving her home; his scarf blowing in the wind slightly as he walked away from her house.
