"Well if you weren't so fucking incompetent, you would have realized that you're touching my girlfriend."
----------------
My eyes widened in total shock and the man's toughness faltered. He let go of me and I stumbled away from him. Levi immediately grabbed my bicep and pulled me away from him.
"Si- since when?" he stuttered. Levi stared him dead in the eye without a blink.
"Since when was it your fucking business? I bet that thought never crossed your tiny fucking walnut mind did it." he asked in a deadpan voice. The man took a step back and noticed that people were staring at him. He shifted uncomfortably. His face was an ugly shade of red.
I couldn't manage to make a sound in the moment. I was in the midst of a panic attack, I couldn't process what was happening. My mind was racing and I was dully aware of how much I was sweating. My hands were trembling and I was lightheaded. Suddenly Levi grabbed my hand. I snapped back to reality and tensed up. "If you're still here when I get back, you'll wish you'd never seen her face." Levi's tone was chilly. He stared for another beat before pulling me towards the door. Right as he moved, Erwin came out from the back to see what the commotion was about.
"Levi where are you going with _____? She's still on the clock." His brows were furrowed in confusion before he noticed the, now sickly white, man standing at the counter and the amount of onlookers.
"Fuck your clock." He spat and took me outside.
The fresh breeze hit my face instantly and I shivered. The sweat on my skin cooled and it helped me come back to my senses a little more. Levi took me around the back of the cafe into the alleyway that ran along the street. There was a bench we usually sat at when the weather was nice on our breaks. He directed me towards it and I used his arm as support to sit down. I put my head in my hands and tried to calm down my breathing. I felt Levi sit quietly behind me.
"Just take deep breaths _____." He instructed softly. His tone was calm but I could feel the tension rolling off of him.
"I- I'm sorry you had to see that."
"_____, please. If I lay my eyes on that piece of shit again, I don't think I will be able to control myself." Levi seemed to be muttering almost to himself as he worked on calming down his anger.
After a few minutes, my body calmed down and the tremor in my hands had subsided. I let them fall from my face and I straightened up to feel the air on my skin. A few minutes of silence passed between us.
"How long has he been doing shit like that." Levi said. It wasn't really a question. It was more of a firm demand of information.
"Um... a while." I admitted.
"How long is that?"
"Well he used to come in maybe once or twice a week a while ago. It started with shitty pickup lines and cringy flirtatious things. But then it got a little handsy... He never touched me in bad places but..." I trailed off, realizing how bad it sounded. I could see his fingers ball into a fist. "He stopped coming for a while. This is the first time I've seen him since then. Though I've never seen him act like that today." I finished explaining, cringing at how horrible it really was.
"Fucking disgusting." he hissed under his breath, "Why didn't you say something or call the police?" I could feel his eyes on me but I couldn't meet them.
"I don't know. I didn't want to make any problems. And I need this job..."
"If you standing up for yourself and your safety made you lose your job, I would hand Erwin's balls to himself in a goddamn coffee cup." Levi's voice raised for a moment. I stared at my lap, trying think of something else. Then I suddenly felt warmth on my hand. Levi had placed his over mine. I hid a smile and looked at him. He was looking away from me, down the alley. "Are you okay? I was so angry that I forgot to ask." he said quietly. It took me a moment to respond after processing Levi's touch.
"I-I'm fine... A lot of this is just happening so fast. It's been a long 24 hours. Are you?"
"I'm fine. But if I see him anywhere near that damn cafe again I swear I'll-" he stopped so abruptly that I glanced around to see what could have caused it.
"Thank you Levi. I really appreciate it." his head turned and his blue gray eyes met mine.
"If you ever feel unsafe or uncomfortable, you need to stand up and say something or take action, _____." Levi said slowly, "You can never let it get that far ever again." I gave him a warm smile and his eyes softened. He stood and fixed his jacket.
"I'm sorry you had to pretend you were my boyfriend. Must've been difficult." I mused. He didn't turn to face me as he spoke.
"No. It was actually quite easy." his voice became so quiet I could barely hear it.
"Careful Levi, I've only stayed one night with you." I chuckled out a joke to hide my embarrassment and surprise. Levi's jaw ticked and his lips pressed together before he turned his back to me.
"Whatever. Let's go. That asshole must be kicked out by now." he shoved his hands in his pockets and began to walk away. I scrambled up from the bench and followed him. He walked ahead of me without a word. I was glad for it. I stared at the back of his head, thoughts swirling around. A small wave of admiration swept over me. He had protected me again. It seemed like he always knew when to act and what to do. He was so good at it. I couldn't help but think that the safest place in the world was with him.
We rounded the corner of the cafe slowly and when we were almost there, Levi stopped.
"I'm going to go in first, okay? Wait out here until it's safe to go in." Levi left me and walked into the cafe. I didn't have to wait long before he walked out again. He looked to his right and then his left, then at me. He nodded his approval and I followed him inside. The customers had gone back to normal. It seemed like nothing crazy had gone down.
"Do you want another tea?" I asked. It was the first bit of words spoken since the bench. He observed me for a moment then nodded.
"Sure." he told me.
Erwin briskly walked up to us and shifted his gaze between the two of us. I could see Hanji peaking from a corner behind him.
"I told her she had to stay there. She nearly ran out after you." He told me. I laughed while Erwin turned back to the raven haired man. "What the hell was that all about." Erwin directed to Levi. Hanji ran up and trapped me in a giant hug.
"_____ I'm so sorry! The one time I'm not out here to protect you from that JERK!"
"Well-" I was cut off.
"We will tell you later. For now I think it's best if _____ takes a break. I want my black tea." Levi said simply. I tidied my apron and headed to the kitchen to brew a black tea for Levi. I made sure to take extra time steeping and getting all the flavor into the cup. I wanted to make sure it was the best cup I've made. Levi headed back to the booth and waited for me.
