The Bigger They Get

"You look gorgeous," I said, staring at my 14-year-old daugter. She spun around in her outfit and smiled.

"Thanks, mom." It was already September. Sophia was off to High School.

"Sophia! Rion! Lena! Taylor! Luke! Annabeth! BREAKFAST IS READY!!!" Percy screamed from downstairs. Sophia darted past me, her nose following the sweet scent of chocolate chip pancakes.

"Hi Mom!" Lena smiled at me, her black hair pulled back off her face, and the rest curled to perfection.

"Hi sweetie. You look gorgeous." Lena and Rion were off to Middle School.

To be honest, it was crazy to think that i now had a high schooler, two middle schoolers, and two elementary schoolers. Sophia was a freshman! She'd be going to college soon! And Rion and Lena weren't babies anymore... it was just so weird to think about.

Percy had whipped up smiley-face choclate chip pancakes, but of course since my kids won't eat the fruit smiley face, it was all out of random chocolates and marshmallows. Taylor's eyes glazed over in delight.

"Daddy, these look amazing!" It was almost time for Taylor and Luke to catch their bus. I was so happy to only have two more years of the brutal 7:00 AM bus stop. That meant that I had to be up at 5:45. Rion and Lena's bus came at 8:00... that was much better. Sophia's came at 7:45, which was conveintly right before the twins.

"Okay, eat up Tay... I have to take you guys to the bus in two mintues!" Percy rean upstairs to throw on some clothes. Rion, Lena, and Sophia ate slower, so I took the free opportunity to go upstairs and shower up. I had to be down by 7:40 to take Sophia down to the bus since Percy had to go to work. I showered quickly, and threw on a pair of jeans and a white crossed blouse, as well as some short, heeled brown leather boots. By the time I'd zippered the left boot, Sophia was calling.

"Mom! I'm gonna be late, let's go!" Sophia was never late when I was home. We always got there five minutes early and sat in the car while I had some coffee. During that time, Rion and Lena had to pack their after-school bags, sports for Rion, and art for Lena. Sophia had swim team after school, so tshe wouldn't be home until 5:30. Rion and Lena wouldn't be home until 5:00, and Taylor and Luke came home at 4:00 with Percy.  As much as the bus times were complicated, school ending times were worse. Taylor and Luke were finished at 3:25, but since Percy worked at their school, they had the opportunity to go to soccer (Luke) and chorus (Taylor) from 3:25 until 4:00, when Percy was done. Rion and Lena were done at 3:40, and had afterschool activities from 3:45 until 4:45. The bus dropped them off at 4:55, so they walked up our hill and got home by 5:00. Sophia wasn't done until 4:15, which I thought was late, but she had a 40 mintue study where she could complete at least some of her homework. Then she had swim practice from 4:20 to 5:20, then she showered at the pool and got a ride home with one or two of her friends.

Just as I finished my mental schedule, Sophia's bus pulled up. She scurried out of the car, and waved at me, smiling.

"Bye, mom!" I waved back and almost felt sad as she walked onto that bus. I knew that now she was in high school, and I would start to lose her.

I literally had to go 40 mph on the way home to get Rion and Lena. When I got there, they were both standing on the curb waiting for me. Rion called shot-gun, and Lena just shook her head, clearly having no desire for sibling rivalry at this early hour.

We arrived at the bus stop just on time.

"Bye Mom!" Lena darted toward the bus, while Rion took his sweet time. I just shook my head.

"Bye Percy!" I almost said, then corrected myself. "Bye Rion! Bye Lena!"

The day whizzed by, and soon enough, there I was making dinner with Percy, Taylor, and Luke. Lena and Rion were on their way home, but Sophia wouldn't be home for a little while.

Percy had his 'Kiss The Cook' apron on as we made sliders and salad. Frank Sinatra radio set the casual, end of summer, amazing feeling in the room. I watched Taylor mouth every word to every song. Luke was outside playing with the Bounce-Back net.

"I can't believe that Sophia's already in high school," Percy said as he chopped the red pepper. I nodded, my mouth full with it.

"I know. It's insane. And Rion and Lena in middle school?"

"Also crazy."

"I'm just glad it's not college yet." I glanced sideways at Percy, and could just him picturing the day that it was college. I knew I felt like the kids were growing up way too fast... I think he got hit harder than me.

As if on cue, Rion and Lena walked through the front door, Rion's forehead beaded with sweat, and Lena's hands marked up with paint.

"Hey guys! How was school?"

"It was good," Rion was smiling, and Lena's eyes danced with the light.

"Why don't you both go-"

"Shower?" They said in unison, laughing. "Okay." Rion and Lena had the twinepathy thing down. Although I strongly believed, and still believe, it isn't a real thing, Rion and Lena thought the exact same way, which was strange because they are nothing alike. Luke and Taylor were on completely different paths for that type of thing.

"Taylor, why don't you set the table, huh?" Percy smiled at his youngest daughter, and I just laughed under my breath as the expression on Tayor's face went from :) to :O to :(. To be perfectly honest, she looked hysterically funny.

"Ugh, Fine."

"Don't say fine!" A very familiar voice warned from the front door. Sophia was home.

"Hi honey! How was school?" Sophia just rolled her eyes.

"Extremely stressful, but overall, good."

"That's a relief."

"We already started talking about college!" Sophia added, making Percy cringe.

"Why don't we talk about something else for a change?" Sophia and Percy exchanged glances and laughed, their voices almost identical.

"Sounds good to me."

AUTHOR'S NOTE:

Hey guys! How was your first few days of September? I started school, and so far, it's going great! I love my classes, my teachers are great, and I've figured out the immensely large new building! Tne only annoying thing is that my locker is in a really annoying spot.

I have some exciting news... Well, let me rephrase that. I heard some exciting news! My mom talked to my dad, and we might be getting our puppy NEXT WEEKEND!! Is that crazy or what? I honestly thought my dad would never say yes, because he's been saying no for my whole life, but he actually said yes! He's still pretty hesitant, but I'm so excited! We're getting a Samoyed, and it's a girl. If you don't know the breed, they're white and fluffy and adorable! I can't get over how cute they are!

So here's the thing... My family is having a hard time picking out a name for the puppy. As I mentioned before, it's a girl, and white in color. I was thinking maybe something snow themed, or winter themed? I really want it to be Greek related somehow... (I was thinking Khione and calling her KiKi but my mom hates it, and Khione was kind of an evil character in the books...)

I need your advice!

QUESTION OF THE CHAPTER: WHAT SHOULD WE NAME OUR PUPPY?
