While waiting for last batch of cookies to get ready, Mrs. Kapoor asked, "I don't see you guys talk much. Are you not friends anymore? Did you fight?"
They were sitting on the dinner table with Ayaan sneaking look at Inaaya who tried to avoid him by talking to his mother. She had some powered sugar in her hair which looked like fairy dust. She had small freckles near her chin which he never noticed. He realized that he had never observed that she was still the Inaaya who has ran out of her own party. She was still the same yet different. Mrs. Kapoor turned to her son squinting, "Did you do something?"
He realized he was staring at her when she turned to him and raised her eyebrows. Before Ayaan could answer, Inaaya replied turning back to Mrs. Kapoor, "No, it is nothing like that. Just busy with homework and clubs"
Ayaan nodded trying to sound cheerful looked at his mother saying, "Yeah. We are friends. We walk to class together and you know we both are selected for Annual Performance"
Mrs. Kapoor was confused, "Weren't you with Zara in that?"
He nodded, "Yeah, but Mrs. P thought that we both would look good together"
He glanced at Inaaya whose eyes seemed sad. She tried to smile when Mrs. Kapoor looked at her. The oven ringed. Mrs. Kapoor quickly ran to get the last slot of the cookies. Inaaya walked over to the rolls and started adding powdered sugar and vanilla cream. Mrs. Kapoor asked while blowing air over the cookies to cool them, "Inaaya, so what are these important plans? Tell me you are not blowing me off like your sister. Whenever I ask her if she would like to come, she makes up excuses"
She blushed as she turned to Mrs. Kapoor, "Actually Mrs. K, I have a date. And, I think my sister is a bit intimidated by you. After all you are the boyfriend's mother"
He watched her with pain as he remembered the night. She had a big smile on her face but he knew it was not real as her eyes didn't sparkle. Mrs. Kapoor laughed, "Really? Intimidated by me? I'll try to not to be then .Okay, so tell me who the lucky boy is?"
Ayaan teased looking in his phone, "He is certainly considered that in school"
"We have Chemistry class together" she replied ignoring his comment. He felt something break inside him. She was blushing and happy with him. He clenched the spoon which was kept on table tightly as his mother started asking questions about the boy and Inaaya replied laughing. Unable to breathe, he walked out of the kitchen saying, "I'll be in my room"
"Don't you have plans with your girlfriend or mom?" Nicholas asked taking a sip from his beer. Ayaan who was staring straight ahead remembered that he lied to his mother that he had plans with Nicholas. He didn't know why he was doing all those things. He replied gripping steering tightly, "Zara is mad at me for I don't know what reason. I can't go with my mom because I have to take care of something"
"And why are we sitting in car when we could go inside the house and play the Fortnite?"
Ayaan sighed, "Because..."
He noticed Inaaya walking out of the house to the mini-pickup truck which probably belonged to Ethan. She smilingly got in car after some talks with the driver. Nicholas gasped, "Don't tell me we are going to follow her"
Ayaan smirked. As he started the engine, Nicholas asked, "Why are you doing this, just answer me that"
He replied turning to his best friend, "Because I miss her. I miss talking to her for hours. I miss everything about her. The funny thing is I want to be him... to be able to spend my days with her. I know I broke her heart but I also want to be the person to mend it."
Nicholas had his eyes widen, "You sound like you are serious about her"
"I don't know Nico. She has done something to me" he started following Ethan's car. Nicholas was staring at Ayaan when he settled back in his seat saying, "Careful"
"About what?" Ayaan asked as he took a turn. Nicholas shrugged, "You sound like someone who is in love. My cousin used to talk like that about his girlfriend."
