Chapter 33 "Need You To Do Me A Favor"

"NO!" Shaylynn yells looking over to see Severide falling to the ground and Halstead making his way over to him.
Shaylynn takes her rifle off burst and puts it on rapid fire.
Continuous gunfire is heard from her as she moves over to where Severide lays.
When she reaches where Severide and Halstead are, she really concentrates on where the gunmen are.
One of the SWAT guys takes one of the gunmen out. The other one stands up and starts running.
Shaylynn puts her scope up to her eye, takes aim, pulls the trigger, then sees blood splatter up into the air.
"GO! GO! GO!" Shaylynn hears Brian Luce, the SWAT Commander, shout out.
She turns and looks at Halstead who's looking up at her, "Take care of him!" she says as she runs inside.
"Hold on, Kelly! Brett and Foster are making their way over!" Halstead tells him.
"Jay, I'm not going to make it!" Severide tells him.
"Don't say that man! You're going to be fine!" Halstead tells him putting more pressure on his wound as Brett and Foster run up to them.
Severide starts coughing up blood, "I need you to do me a favor," he tells Halstead.
"Name it!" Halstead says.
"I want you to make my kids your kids," Severide tells him coughing up more blood.
Brett and Foster look at Halstead, "Kelly, you're going to be fine! You hang in there for your kids!" Halstead tells him as Severide's eyes close.
"Kelly!" Halstead yells at him.
Brett feels for a pulse.
Halstead looks at her, she shakes her head 'no'.
He looks over at the Art Institute to see Shaylynn running out.
"Kelly!" she says as she drops to her knees.
She looks at Halstead's face then looks at Brett and Foster to see that they're crying.
"No, Kelly!" Shaylynn says as she starts performing CPR.
Brett puts her hand on Shaylynn's, "Shaylynn, he's gone."
Tears start falling from Shaylynn's eyes, "NO! He can't be!" she says as she moves Brett's hand off her's.
"Shaylynn, he's gone," Halstead tells her wrapping his arms around her.
She turns to Halstead and starts crying on his chest.

After all the madness is taken care of, everyone lines up.
Severide is carried to the Ambulance, as everyone salutes him.
Shaylynn is the last one in one of the lines.
Halstead being one of them to help carry Severide, he turns around and looks at her, "Go with him," he tells her.
Shaylynn looks at the paramedic who has his hand reached out to her to help her up into the ambulance.
She walks over, grabs the paramedics hand, and gets up into the ambulance, "I'll meet you at Med," Halstead tells her before closing the doors.
The ambulance takes off leaving everyone devastated about what just happened to one of their own.

At Med, Severide is taken into the ED with Shaylynn following behind.
Dr. Rhodes is there to meet them with Emily standing beside him.
The paramedics take Severide into a room with Dr. Rhodes following them as Emily embraces Shaylynn who instantly breaks down.
"Come on, let's go in here," Emily tells Shaylynn turning her toward the doctor's lounge.
Emily walks Shaylynn over to the couch and sits her down, "What am I going to tell Shannara, Dominic, and Destiny?" she asks Emily in between sobs, "I couldn't protect their Father!"
Emily sits down on the couch, she puts her hand on Shaylynn's, "This is not your fault! You were there doing your job. You can't be everywhere!"
"I know it's not right for me to say, but whenever I'm at a scene that Jay or Kelly are at, they are my first priority to protect!" she tells Emily, "I failed today!"
Shaylynn looks over to see Brett and Foster walk past. She starts crying more knowing they're there to tell Dr. Rhodes at what time Severide died so he can officially pronounce him dead.
"I can't believe this is happening! This has to be a dream!" Shaylynn says.
Emily puts her hand on Shaylynn's back, "I was I could tell you it is a dream but I can't."
She looks over and sees Halstead rush into the ED and past the doctor's lounge, "I'll be right back," Emily tells Shaylynn.
Hurrying out of the lounge, Emily walks up to Halstead, "Em?" Halstead says surprised, "Why are you here?" he asks.
"Connor called me after he heard what happened with Kelly," she tells him, "He had a feeling Shaylynn would come in with him and thought it would be a good idea if I was here for her."
"Where is she?" Halstead asks looking around.
"I have her in the doctor's lounge," she tells him.
Halstead is about to walk away when Emily stops him, "Before you go in there you need to know Shaylynn is blaming herself for Kelly's death."
Halstead looks at her confused, "Why?" he asks her.
"She said she didn't protect him," Emily tells him, "Jay, I don't know if it's hit you yet but Shaylynn is really going to need your all out love and support. There can't be any more fighting between you two."
"We were getting along just fine until we received those calls!" Halstead tells her, "I wish I could go back to that time and just hold her on me so she wouldn't have gotten up to answer her phone."
Emily shakes her head, "Well, you can't!" she reminds her brother, "Shaylynn and Kelly's kids are going to need you now more than ever! A lot of focus is going to be put on those kids and Shaylynn since she's the Mother of his children."
Halstead looks down, "Em, what do I say? What do I do? With everything that has happened in the past between Shaylynn, Kelly, and myself, some people have said with the fighting Shaylynn and I have been doing recently that Kelly was going to move in and take her away from me. I don't want to say the wrong thing and give them the impression that I'm happy he's gone and can't do that now."
"Who said that?" Emily asks.
"Quite a few people including Will," Halstead tells her.
"Well, you're not happy he's gone, right?" Emily asks.
Halstead looks at her, "No! God no! Those kids are going to be devastated!"
"Then you need to step up and be the man I know you are and take care of your family!" Emily tells him, "And the first thing you're going to have to do is take Shaylynn to Kelly's place and tell his Mom and those kids what happened."
Halstead looks over and sees Severide's body being rolled out of the room.
Dr. Rhodes walks over to Halstead, "I know what you're about to ask," Halstead says, "Shaylynn and Jennifer will be taking care of the funeral arrangements," he tells Dr. Rhodes.
Dr. Rhodes puts his hand on Halstead's shoulder, "I'll let the Corner know," he says then walks away.
"I better go and check on Shaylynn," Halstead tells his sister.
He walks around her and starts walking toward the doctor's lounge with Emily behind him.
As he gets closer, he can hear Shaylynn crying.
Opening up the door, Halstead walks in.
Shaylynn looks up to see who just walked in. When she sees it's Halstead, she stands up and quickly goes to him, putting her arms around his neck.
Halstead puts his arms around her and pulls her close.

No words are said.

Halstead just holds Shaylynn tight while she cries.
