CHAPTER 27: A Change

RUBY

I wanted to comfort Boulder but I didn't know how right now.

He just lost his best friend and Beta of his pack. There were no words I could say that would comfort him.

We stayed beside Jai while the others took care of the ones still alive from both Lecter's and Leon's pack. While they did that, I noticed something I never did before on Jai.

It was a marking. It looked to be a tattoo of some sort with a symbol I couldn't make out.  Though I knew I had seen that same one somewhere before but who?

While I began thinking about it, I heard Boulder say my name.

"Are you okay?" He asks while sniffling.

"Yeah. It's just, look at this tattoo on the left side of his chest." I point it out for Boulder.

"Holy shit." I hear him say under his breath.

"What? What does it mean?" I ask worried while I see his anger quickly start to grow.

"Why Jai." He cries a little under his breath before getting up and then takes off as fast as he can out to the front to his car and speeds off.

I quickly tell the Delta of his pack to keep an eye on everyone before I quickly grab the set of keys on the counter and make my way outside and smell Boulders scent. Since I'm not sure in which car these keys belong to, I press the unarmed part of the alarm and see which one it belongs to. It's Jai's. I get in and speed out of the driveway and try to catch up to Boulder.

I know he's pissed off and everything but he can't be driving like this. He can kill himself.

When I finally find his car, it's parked in the long driveway that leads up to the Head Elders home.

I see Boulder stomping his way past the guards and I immediately stop the car and get out and start running after him.

When I get inside, I notice a couple of guards trying to hold him back as he looks like he's wanting to kill the elder that was just at our place earlier.

"You killed him! You're never going to get away with this!" Boulder yells at him.

"I'm not the one who killed him. Leon did." He smirks at him.

What the hell is going on? What did I miss?

"Bullshit! You instigated the fight! Lecter and Leon were never really after me. They were ordered to kill Jai you sick fuck!" He shouts at the elder as I walk up to Boulder's side.

I have never seen the look that's on his face. He looks worn out and defeated.

"What is going on?" We hear the head elder ask as he walks up to us from behind the elder Boulder is yelling at.

"Tell him!" Boulder yells out at him.

The elder glares at Boulder and neither one of them breaking eye contact with each other.

"It's nothing." The elder tells the head elder.

"Boulder? What's going on?" The head elder asks.

"This sick fuck killed Jai." Boulder blurts out.

"What?!" The head elder yells in shock as he looks at the elder. "This isn't true. Tell me right now this isn't true." He says while looking at him.

"Oh come on. I did you a favor. I have done nothing but cover up your messes for too fucking long and have helped you keep your title clean. It's time you own up to your own shit and clean up your own damn messes." He exclaims.

The head Elder looks shocked and confused.

"There's nothing I have to hide. I have done nothing wrong, except have you as the next in line to take over my title when I'm gone. But now that I heard this, what you did to your own son, you will be sentenced to confinement without ever being able to leave. There will never be a re-trial for you and you will be stripped of all your abilities and strengths for eternity." The head Elder tells him. He then looks over at his guards. "Take him away."

The guards walk over and take him away. The head Elder then looks at us.

"Sir..." I began but he stopped me.

"Please. Forgive me for not seeing things sooner. I'm truly sorry about Jai. He was a good kid and a great Beta. I'll make sure he gets the burial he deserves." He says with so much sympathy.

The guards release Boulder and he grabs my shoulders and pulls me closer.

"Next time Sir, you should listen to me." Boulder tells him and walks away.

We stop and turn back around after we hear the head Elder call out our names.

"Wait you two! There's still the matter of you going against what I said." He addresses.

He's right and we shouldn't have gone against what he told us not to do, but in all fairness, his judgement wasn't the best.

Boulder holds my hand a little tighter and seems like he feels worried at what his punishment might be and mine as well.

"What's your decision?" I ask nervous myself.

He looks at us a while before saying anything with an expressionless look on his face.

"Well, it does take a lot of guts to go against what the head elder of the council tells them not to do. It's guts that we need more of on the council. So Boulder? I am offering you the title of Head Elder when I die." He says.

Everyone gasps in shock at his statement, even Boulder. In fact, he's speechless.

"Th-thank you Sir." Boulder finally comes out of shock.

"Well, I will go over more details and when we'll announce you to the council." He says.

"Thank you." Boulder repeats.

"Well I need to get going. I have a lot to do. Good night you two." He says and starts walking away.

During the entire car ride home, he was quiet and it was awkward. I wasn't sure how he felt. I bet it was a lot of different emotions.

Then once we pull up in the driveway and he turns the car off, we sit there for a moment before I break the silence.

"If you ever wanna talk..." I was cut off by him smashing his lips onto mine giving me a long passionate kiss.

"Thank you so much for being with me. I love you so much." He tells me while touching our foreheads together.

"And thank you for loving me." I reply.

We end up sitting in the car for a while before going inside the house and having reality hit us in what happened today.

Who knows what tomorrow will bring but what I know for sure it's always going to be okay as long as we have each other.
