I felt incredibly restless, standing outside with Mom, Bella, and Gabby while the nurse helped Milani change into a hospital gown. Just as I was trying to calm my nerves, the nurse came out of the delivery room and said, "Miss Bella, Milani is asking for you," before heading to Dr. Jones' office.
Bella turned to me and asked, "Wanna come?" I gave her a disbelieving look, thinking she must be joking.
"To the delivery room?" I clarified, just to be sure.
"Obviously," she replied, and I scoffed, not believing her. Although I'd love to be there for Milani, I was pretty sure she wouldn't want me in the delivery room.
"You kidding right?" I asked, staring at her in surprise.
"You need to be in there with me, come on," Bella insisted, her grip on my arm firm. I hesitated, feeling uneasy about the idea.
"No Bella, you should probably go with Mom," I suggested, trying to reason with her. But she was adamant.
"Sarah will come later, come with me first," she said, her determination unwavering. And I felt a sense of dread wash over me as I pleaded with her.
"Bella, please don't do this," I begged, rubbing my face in frustration. But she just smiled and dragged me into the delivery room, despite my protests.
As we entered, Milani's puffy eyes locked onto mine, and she shot me a glare that made my heart skip a beat. I swallowed hard, feeling trapped and unsure of what to do. My legs felt weak, and I stood frozen, staring back at Milani, wishing I could just disappear.
"Bella.." Milani called out, her voice trembling as she reached out for her friend.
Bella quickly moved to her side, offering words of encouragement. "You got this, don't worry, it will end soon. Jade should be here any moment," she said, trying to reassure her. Milani nodded, tears streaming down her face as she cried out in pain. Just then, Jade rushed into the room, and Milani's face lit up with relief.
"Mom!" she cried, her voice shaking with emotion. Jade was by her side in an instant, stroking her hair and speaking softly.
"Oh, sweetheart, it's okay, it will end soon. It's okay, my love," she cooed, trying to comfort her daughter.
Watching Milani's pain and distress was heartbreaking, and I stood there feeling helpless, unsure of what to do. The scene was emotionally overwhelming, and all I could do was stand by and watch as Jade and Bella tried to support Milani through this challenging moment.
Twenty minutes had passed, and the doctor still hadn't attended to Milani. I was growing increasingly worried and frustrated as I watched her suffer in pain.
As the nurses entered the delivery room, I demanded, "Where the hell is the doctor?"
"I'm sorry, Dr. Jones will be here shortly." One of them apologized hastily. Just then Dr jones walked in.
"Where have you been doctor? She's in pain and needs to be relieved now." My anger was barely contained.
"I had to check on Veronica before coming," Dr Jones explained and I rubbed my face, struggling to keep my composure. My worry and frustration were simmering just below the surface, but I knew I had to remain calm for Milani's sake.
"How's she and the baby doing?" I asked, anxiety creeping into my voice.
"I'm sorry, there's no improvement," he replied, and I nodded glumly, feeling a pang of disappointment.
"Please attend to Milani," I urged, my eyes fixed on her distressed form.
"Sure," he said, striding over to Milani's side. "How are you doing?" he asked, his tone softening. And Milani sniffled, her sobs momentarily subsiding.
"The contractions are really strong... I feel like pushing," she gasped, her face scrunched in pain.
Dr. Jones swiftly took his position, his hands gently parting her legs for examination. The room held its breath, the only sound Milani's ragged breathing.
"Alright..." he murmured, his eyes locking onto Milani's. "I can see the baby's head. It's time to push." He said and Milani's eyes locked onto Bella, desperation shining in them.
"Bella, give me your hand," she pleaded, her voice trembling. But just as Bella's hand was about to clasp Milani's, Dr. Jones's voice cut through the air, halting her movement.
"Sultan should instead," Dr. Jones said to Bella, his voice calm and collected.
"Why?" Bella asked, curiosity etched on her face.
"Milani's grip is going to hurt you," Dr. Jones explained. "But a man can endure the pain for a while. I advise Sultan to hold your hand, Milani."
"Give me your hand!" Milani screamed at me, her desperation palpable. I rushed to her side, taking her shaky hand into mine. As she squeezed, her face contorted in pain, and she began to scream. Jade rubbed her thigh, urging her on.
"Keep pushing, you're doing great," Dr. Jones encouraged.
"Oh God!!" Milani screamed, gasping for breath.
"You're almost there Lani," I whispered into her ear, trying to reassure her. Our eyes met, and she nodded determinedly.
"Uhhh!!!" she screamed again, her grip on my hand tightening to the point where I felt my fingers go numb.
"You're doing a good job," Bella encouraged, her voice filled with warmth.
With one final push, Milani brought her baby into the world. Dr. Jones gently suctioned out mucus with a bulb syringe, and the baby's first cries filled the room. We all gazed in wonder at the tiny being. Milani's eyes shone with pride as she gazed at her child, cooing softly, "My baby."
Bella rushed to embrace her, exclaiming, "Congrats, Milani!" And Jade whispered words of praise and affection, wiping the sweat from Milani's forehead as she beamed with joy. The room was filled with love, relief, and the miracle of new life.
"Would you like to cut the cord, Sultan?" Dr jones turned to me with an unexpected question. I hesitated, taken aback by the request. Would Milani be okay with me being involved in this intimate moment? I wasn't sure how to respond, unsure if she would even want me to participate.
"I don't think that's a great idea Dr. Jones," I said, not wanting to overstep any boundaries or ruin the moment. But Dr. Jones persisted.
"Come on, it would be awesome if you just cut it. You gave a helping hand in the child's delivery." I glanced at Milani, seeking her approval, but she remained silent, her gaze locked on mine.
"Sultan go ahead and cut it." Bella chimed in. With that, I walked over to Dr. Jones and cut the umbilical cord, the baby's cries filling the room as I did so.
