Chapter Twenty Seven
When I come to, it is only minutes later, and my head is on Hades lap. He looks much better, eyes returned to normal.
"You fainted."
"Avery!" I jump up, ignoring the wooziness I feel when I get up too quickly, "He might be alive we have to-"
"The Twins are guarding the body. " Hades stops me. "For the ritual to be complete, enough blood needs to seep into the earth."
"No!" I cry.
We might not be together, but Avery didn't deserve this. He just wanted to be apart of a brotherhood. There is nothing wrong with that. They're killing their own, telling them there is nothing to fear. Meanwhile the face of terror Avery made right before he died is one seared into my mind. He was absolutely terrified, and I didn't stop it.
"I'm sorry Agapi."
"No!" I break through his grasp and run to Avery's body. I'm wearing the cap, they can't see me.
He is the last of the three, the last to fall, and the blood from his throat has already begun seeping into the earth. I close his eyes out of respect, and quietly cry on his chest. I should have warned him about Kappa Sig.
"These nights never cease to exhilarate me." Tee says to her sister, fixing her hair in a compact mirror.
"These robes are so heavy." Noelle complains. "Can't I take it off?"
"You'll forget." Tee retorts. "You don't see me taking mine off, and I literally have blood spatter on it. Gross!"
It seems that the annoying sorority girl act was not just an act. They have no respect for the dead whatsoever, no respect for anything.
I see Hades by the bushes I was just hiding in, motioning me to come back, but I spot the knife, still bloody, used to kill Avery. These sirens... they deserve it... I lean over Avery's body, apologizing in my mind, to grab it. Then I slowly rise, so that I can sneak up on the two who have their backs to me.
"No!" Hades mouths to me, picking up on what I am thinking of doing. No one will miss them, and maybe it'll stop some of the deaths. Maybe I'll be helping. I can't stop now, the six, and god knows how many more, dead deserve revenge.
"Hello Ladies!" Hades does the one thing that would stop me, and steps out of the bushes, forcing me to retreat.
"Hades!" Tee uses her sickenly sweet voice. "You just missed the show."
"But still so glad that you could make it." Noelle chimes.
"Not much of a party." He shrugs. "Wasn't like the ones in your sorority play house you live in."
"You are right, much more fun."
I drop the knife and move around the fire to stand behind Hades. The Twins are actually smiling, how can they be fucking smiling?
"Who runs this show?" Hades asks the two, "Because you two definitely no connection to the original worshippers who used those prayers."
"No we do not." Noelle replies. "You are correct."
"But it is not time for you to know." Tee continues. "Now great big bad daddy of the ghosts, you should go and greet your new guests."
The sirens leave Hades with the bodies and the fire. When I am sure they are gone, I rip the hat off and shove it against Hades' chest.
"You let them die."
I am angry, I am beyond angry.
"Agapi, you know that's not true."
