Nazir echoed out a curse behind you, eyes as wide as your as you took in the billowing of smoke coming from the sanctuary, Imperial horses scattered about.
Without a second of thought, you were rushing into the black mist, a loud yell of warning coming from your fellow assassin as you disappeared into the fog.
Smoke clogged your veins, burning your lungs and scorching your nose as heat flamed about around you. Panic surged.
Veezara. He... he was...
You had to get him out.
He had saved your ass when you'd gone to kill Victoria, and now, it was time for you to return the favor.
With a nasty cough, you plunged head first into the deep could of darkness, the cracking of the fire encasing the walls around you and making you sweat from how hot it was. Somehow, you made it to the main room of the sanctuary.
All the soldiers were dead- and...
Oh, gods.
"Arnbjorn," you choked out.
You looked around, despairing.
"Veezara?" came your frantic yell, "Veezara! Are you in here?"
You nearly crawled your way to the pool in the middle of the room, desperately trying to see through the smoke, to see any sign of an Argonian hiding amidst the water.
"Come on!" you shouted, "Veezara?"
Not a word. Nothing but the fire tapping it's silent grins at your misery.
A rough hand grabbed your bicep, hard. "Are you insane, ____? Get your ass out!" Nazir roared, sharply tugging you down with him.
You scrambled, trying to get away as terror gripped you whole. "No! No, no, I can't-"
"You can, you idiot! You're going to get us all killed!"
He hackled out the smoke from his lungs, struggling forward with you right behind. Tears blurred your vision, freely falling from your cheeks while he tried to get out, you a mere walking shell behind him.
Anger swirled in your chest.
Hope spiraled in your chest.
Helplessness crawled underneath your skin.
Sorrow embraced you in its willing arms, more like a trap rather than a hug from a friend. You stumbled on your feet, nearly tripping straight into a fire before catching yourself.
All the sudden, light flooded your eyes once more, and clear air wheezed inside of your lips as you gagged, covered in soot from head to toe. Silently, you started to cry, going limp against the ground.
It was done.
You were done.
How... how could you go on? You never repaid a debt, never told him a thing, and yet...
"Are you kidding me, ____?" came the Redguard's hiss. "You nearly died! You would've suffocated in there!"
"Like the rest of our brethren?" you choked out.
"You would disgrace them with throwing your life away for no reason- leaving a job unfinished?"
"They are dead!" was your shout.
A snarl. "Do not think I don't know that fact. Ride to the Dawnstar sanctuary, Listener, meet Cicero and Babette there. I'll take care of everything here."
You shook your head, "I'm not-"
"That fire has been going for an hour, ____!"
"I am not leaving them to rot there! I will bury them myself, all alone if I have to, but I'm not leaving them there!"
There was a loud pair of coughs that echoed into the early night air near the entrance to the sanctuary.
You whipped around.
Gabriella. Festus. Veezara.
You rushed forward, helping lift completely passed out Gabriella from Veezara's arms and setting her down by a batch of grass that had been undisturbed. You glanced to the men behind you.
Veezara met your gaze, worried and overwhelmed.
"Find horses," you command quietly, "round up 4."
Nazir was the first to walk off with haste feet; the Imperials could be back any moment. Festus followed.
Veezara approached.
"You're okay," he murmured.
"I thought you were dead," you answer, biting your lip.
"I would not be so easily killed, ____," he assured. "I feared you would be ambushed by those damn soldiers."
"They left," you respond.
"In a hurry- they left so many horses," he muttered.
You shook your head, standing fully with eyes brimming with fear.
"I do not know what to do," you uttered.
"That is alright."
"It will have to be."
"You always hated Astrid anyway."
"Veezara."
"It is true, is it not?"
You refused to answer, merely shaking your head with a scowl.
"Sithis has once more tried to cleanse the brotherhood," you muttered. "I hope he needs to do no more."
"We will make it out, ____, it is alright," he consoled.
"We will make it out," you agreed.
"And we will live."
"And we will live," you repeated.
"You are calm, and now you can lead," he established.
"With a clear head, I suppose," you mumbled.
He took a few more steps forward.
And then, he gave you a hug.
"We're alright," he assured once more.
