The prince had failed at his own game.

Miserably. He had not tried to let you win, either. No, he had... He couldn't resist. Sheogorath was never denied what he wanted and he was not used to having to wait. No, he got what he wanted.

And he wanted you, but you had just turned the game around. Not only did you have one guaranteed wish, but he would have to be under your every whim and call for an entire day.

He swallowed, his hands dropped into his sides.

Your face slowly grew into a sly little smile, one that set off every alarm in his head. He was used to being unpredictable, used to predicting people, but he had very quickly found out he couldn't predict you. He didn't know what your motives were, what you wanted. Sure, he knew you valued your job above everything else, but he knew nothing else.

If there was one thing Sheogorath hated more than being sane, it was being uninformed. And after being uninformed, it was being powerless.

He was two out of his three most hated things, and he had put himself in this very situation. He had been impatient, he had been impulsive. He hadn't come to this predicament ever in his long, long life. He had never been bested by a mortal. He had never been fooled- he was the fool! How could you fool a fool, even?

You knew, and at least Sheogorath had experienced that first hand. He didn't know what exactly it was about you, but you could somehow play his games. You understood them, and you figured out how to beat them.

You had really figured out how to beat the prince of unpredictability, the madman.

Maybe because you were mad yourself, in a logical, sociopathic way, that you knew how to manipulate him just the same as he could to a normal mortal. Maybe he had played his game too much and had gotten too cocky. Maybe he had let you win.

Maybe he had just wanted something different. Maybe he was so bored of always being in control that he wanted a change.

Either way, you now stood before him, no doubt thinking of every single thing you could do with your winnings. You could do horrible, awful things. You could do amazing, humane things.

Or, you could do nothing at all. Hold it over his head.

You could ask for immortality. He would give it to you.

If you had asked nicely enough before, he would have given it to you. If you had ticked him off, he would have given it to you. He didn't know why you would waste that single wish on something you could get with just a little pleading and puppy dog eyes.

And yet, for some reason, you stepped closer to him. You filled in that gap he had made when he realized his mistake, and you gripped his hand.

"I get one wish," you breathed.

"You do," he murmured, watching you with those cat-like eyes.

"I want something other than this," your eyes gazed off. "I don't want to live like this."

He, taken aback, narrowed his eyes. "You do not want my power? You do not want immortality? You do not want a family? You..."

"I want to live. I want life."

"And I am to give that to you?"

You looked to him, your head tilting up and your eyes stripping the confidence within him and replacing it with a sort of sorrowful pity he had never felt before. It was a childlike gaze, one that ran so deep and yet seemed so light it alarmed him.

"Yes."

"You... How am I to do that?"

"Find me a place where I belong. Where I didn't become like this."

He swallowed.

He was to let you go.

He had to let you go.

He...

"You are not happy with the life you have lived," he could barely get out.

"You have made me realized that," you spoke softly.

"And with your deal?" he questioned.

"Let that be the one thing I remember."

"So it will be."

You let out a giggle, your drink meeting with Mirabelle's as you smiled wide.

Her similar smile was genuine and bright as she spoke with her silky smooth voice, eyes beaming with pride. "To you, the newest master of the college."

"Oh, shush," you blushed, waving your hand. "I'm barely qualified."

As the conversation continued between both of you, he watched from the corner of the tavern.

Good.

After five years, you looked as breath-taking as you did the short amount of time Sheogorath got to talk to you. A broken, murderous woman who knew no different that madness.

He missed you.

You were different now, though.

He didn't mind it.

You had your one wish.

You were enjoying your new life without a idea of where you'd come from. It was the cause of many tears, but many hopeful wonderings.

One day, you would find him again.

Stumble upon him when he had tried to keep hidden.

And you would remember.

And you would ask for just a day of his company.

A day with him.

And you would end it with the same bet.

And he would not let you win.

He would keep you with him.

You were his now.

You had won your deals.

But the one thing you did not know?

He did not lose twice.
