Maya's pov

~

All this time I had kept the rebel part of me inside. I had pushed it down. I did it for Riley. The friendship we had was all that kept me from braking. From spinning out of control.

But I didn't have anyone to impress anymore. I didn't need to protect Riley.

I was finally free. Free to do as I please.

My rebellious side was finally taking over for good, and once you cross over to that side there's no going back. Ever.

Because once your as broken and damaged as me, there's no way to save me. I'm not worth it. I've always been on my own. I never really had anyone except for the Matthews.

I defiantly had a rude awakening. I wasn't even wanted by them. I truly had no one. Buts it's okay. I'm used of it. It's not a new feeling. I know what it feels like to be alone all the time. Your surrounded by so many people, yet you feel so alone. Alone to listen to your own thoughts pound their way through your skull.

Because really in the end, the only person you have is yourself.

I'm not worth saving.

I never was.

I never will be.

And I don't anyone will try.

I felt the cool breeze against my bare skin and the grass underneath me. The sun's heat filled my body with warmth. I smiled. I finally felt at peace. For the first time, when I closed my eyes, I didn't see blood or shattered glass. I didn't see my mother crying or my father screaming.

I saw Lucas and Riley. They were laughing. They sat together in a cozy living room, there were rose petals on the floor, and 2 glasses of champagne on the table. They looked older, much older. Lucas looked genuinely happy. He had moved on. He had finally gotten over me. Good.

"It's already been 15 years since we first met in middle school." Said Lucas.

"Wow. Already. Time flies." Lucas reached for Riley's hand. She let him take it.

The both gazed into each other's eyes.

"I love you." Said Lucas.

"I love you too."

They both smiled.

"You know, it's her birthday today."

She smiled, her eyes watery.

"I know."

He held her hand tight.

"I wanted to honor her, by asking you a question I've been wanting to ask you for a long time."

He got down on his knees and pulled out a box. He opened it and said:

"Riley Matthews will you marry me?"

She held her hand to her heart, and as a year trickled down her cheek, she replied:

"Yes, Lucas of course I'll marry you."

He grinned and he stood up and kissed her.

As they were hugging, Riley asked:

"Do you think, wherever she is, she's celebrating her birthday?"

He pulled away from the hug, but kept his hand on her waist. He looked into her beautiful eyes.

"I hope that wherever she is, she's happy. I hope she's finally at peace."

I am Lucas. I am.
