*Violet's POV*
"Yes. I do trust you." I said to the hook -erm Fernald- "But we need to leave right now. I want to get back to my family."
"Of course. Follow me."

Fernald led me around the hospital and out the front door and to a teal van wit music notes and three letters on it. "VFD?"
" Not the one your parents were in, obviously, but they'll help. "

What was he talking about: "one that my parents were in"? My parents were in a group called VFD? Was it a sorority or a club or something? How come they didn't tell us?

A group of people with extremely forced looking smiles approached us. "Hey, brother and sister!" A man with a guitar said, "You're new volunteers, right? The ones that went to the library of records?"
" Yes we are, " Fernald lied, and I backed him up with a friendly nod, "Say is it almost time to go yet?"
"Yep! Pile in everybody!"

Fernald and I climbed in first, seeing as we were closest to the van. I plopped down and smoothed out my uniform from Prufrock. God I hope my family is okay. By backing out of this deal, I'm obviously putting my brother and sister back into danger; and the Quagmires by association. Oh god Duncan. I miss him so much. If you're a lover, you should know that the lonely moments just get lonelier the longer you're in love, rather than if you were alone.

"He must be devastated." I whispered. I wish he was right next to me so I could ball myself up in his arms.
"No need for anyone to be devastated, sister!" One of the smiley people said. "VFD is all about being cheerful!"
" But what is VFD? "
"Violet no!"

Just then, the van filled with a cheerful song that I didn't like.

We are Volunteers Fighting Disease,
And we're cheerful all day long,
If someone said that we were sad,
That person would be wrong!

We visit people who are sick,
And try to make them smile,
Even off their noses bleed,
Or if they cough up bile!

Tra la la, Fiddle dee dee,
Hope you get well soon,
Ho ho ho, hee hee hee,
Have a heart shaped balloon!

We visit people who are ill,
And try to make them laugh,
Even if the doctor says,
He must saw them in half!

We sing and sing all night and day,
And then we sing some more,
We sing to boys with broken bones,
And girls whose throats are sore!

Tra la la, Fiddle dee dee,
Hope you get well soon,
Ho ho ho, hee hee hee,
Have a heart shaped balloon!

We sing to men with measles,
And to women with the flu,
And if you breath in deadly germs,
We'll probably sing to you!

Tra la la, Fiddle dee dee,
Hope you get well soon,
Ho ho ho, hee hee hee,
Have a heart shaped balloon!

(A/N: Oh boy that was a doozie to research...)

The Volunteers looked at me expectantly.
"My friend Isadora would certainly enjoy the poetic form of your song," I said, looking for something positive to say.
"Thanks, Sister!"
"Cool hooks, Brother!"
" Erm, thanks? " Fernald replied. Fernald and I sat in uncomfortable silence, listening to the conversations, until the van stopped across the street from a lopsided building with a taxi sitting in front. The only person in the taxi was a man eating a donut.

Fernald and I decided to stay here and ask the taxi driver for a ride. Only problem: Neither of us had money. But then I saw a small sign on one window.

"Knock for a Very Formal Discount."
"Do it. He's with VFD. The real one."
"I still don't know what that is."
" Just knock, Violet!"

I did a knock my parents taught me -for old times sake.

"Knock three times, tap twice, and knock once." Mother once said.

The man rolled down his window with a smile. "You're a Baudelaire!"
"How do you know that?"
"I'll explain it on the way to meet your brother, sister, and the Quagmires."

I hesitantly sat in the back and Fernald sat in the passenger's seat.

"I'm Pecuchet Bellerophon. Everyone calls me Pip. I have ties to your family. It's complicated. Anyway, I'll take you to the Village of Fowl Devotees. Jacques Snicket and I have set up a drop off point for you at the Nevermore Tree."

I nodded, although I had no clue who Jacques Snicket is.

"Can you take me to Stricken Stream, Pip?" Fernald asked, "I need to contact someone at Hector's and then I'll need a ride."
" You got it, Widdershins. But, of course, there's the matter of the Very Formal Discount. "
"I promise I'll give you a book recommendation when Violet is with her family and friends."
" Family. " I corrected.

Pip Bellerophon gave me a smile and started up the taxi. "You think of the Quagmires as your family?" He asked.

I nodded sheepishly and confirmed that.

"So, Fernald, you have a sister?" I asked.
" Yeah, actually. She's an aspiring scientist and she's sixteen, if my memory serves me well. There's nothing in this world I care more about than Fiona. "
"Fiona?"
" Yep. I might be separated from her, but I'll never forget the importance of family. "
"I wholeheartedly agree."
" All decent people do! " Pip interjected.

We made small talk about nothing important, but I wasn't really in the conversation. As I said before, a moment without Duncan felt like an eternity. Klaus must've been hurting too. I had to do it though. He knows I had to do it. It still didn't make it any less painful. And Isadora probably went crazy trying to keep them calm. I've been gone for what? Half a day? Ugh I'm weak.

Eventually, Pip drove to a small house and a barn next to a giant tree. There was a taxi parked in the driveway and I thanked Pip and Fernald for getting me back to the people I belong with.

"No problem, Kiddo." Pip Bellerophon said with a grin.
"Fernald?"
" Yeah?"
"Go find your sister." I said before walking towards the house.

I knocked on the door and it flew open to reveal Isadora, Miss Caliban, and a man in a dusty pair of overalls. "Violet!" She said, wrapping me into a tight hug. She pulled me into the little house and I saw Klaus sitting at the counter and swirling around water in his glass. He looked up at me and ran to me.

"Violet! Violet you're okay! I knew Pip would come through! You're okay!" He said, gripping me tightly. "I'm sorry for anything I've ever said it done to you! I love you!"

I chuckled. "Klaus I've been gone for 12 hours, but I love you too. Where's Duncan?"
" Farthest right room in the hall. " Isadora began, but there was no need. Duncan had already came out of the room and we were hugging -more like squeezing- eachother. I didn't want to let go. After a long and heartfelt kiss, Duncan was still holding me close.

"Please never leave again!"
" You couldn't drag me away! "

Two days later, we found out Olaf was imprisoned for his crimes.
