"pete." ryan didn't know how else to start the conversation. he was standing in pete's living room door, watching pete pace the length of the room. there was no expression present on pete's face, and ryan assumed that he was just trying to hide his feelings - rather than feeling absolutely no remorse whatsoever.

"ryan." pete stopped pacing, and turned to face the taller man in his living room. even though pete had opened the front door to let ryan in, this was probably the first time that pete had actually acknowledged ryan since he got here - nearly an hour ago. ryan contemplated whether to give the facts to pete straight, or go for a more comforting approach. he decided to give a harsh statement first, and then have a softer attitude towards pete later.

"that was shitty." that was the best thing ryan had come up with, but it did cause pete's face to change slightly. a small frown made its way onto pete's face, and ryan knew from then that pete felt some remorse from the way he had reacted to patrick. at least that was a start.

"i know." it took a few seconds for pete to answer. after talking, pete began pacing again. ryan knew that pete didn't want to have this conversation, but it had to be said. this needed to be sort out sooner rather than later. both pete and patrick were hurt from the situation - but pete was in the wrong. however, at the same time, he was in a bad (possibly worse than patrick) state. and that needed to be sorted too.

"why'd you do it?" ryan didn't know what else to say. he knew that pete would attempt to deadpan the conversation at any point that he possibly could. it was going to be hard work to get pete to understand that patrick wasn't going to throw everything back in his face; in fact, that's exactly what pete had done to patrick. but ryan decided that he'd bring that up later, or allow pete to work that one out for himself.

"i had to." pete stopped pacing once again, but this time, he didn't turn to face ryan. the taller boy sighed, walking over to pete's couch, and sitting down on it. he signalled to pete to sit down next to him, but pete just shook his head. ryan sighed again, and tried to argue with pete.

"no you didn't." how was he going to explain to pete that patrick loved him? it wasn't going to be the same. pete had loved patrick for a while. patrick has just realised exactly how much he loved pete. he confessed. and pete reacted badly. it was simple, yet it was going to be a complicated situation to sort out.

"yes i did." pete carried on pacing. ryan could feel the urge to give up. he was getting frustrated. pete would always refuse to act mature in any bad situation he'd got himself into when he was younger. however, it had stopped when pete had been giving medication to calm down his mood swings. of course, there were still times where pete would refuse to forgive someone or apologise, but they were infrequent, and they were easy to deal with after a few days. however, this wasn't a situation that could wait that long.

"why, though?" ryan used a softer tone this time. there was no point arguing with pete - it would go on forever. maybe using a less angry tone would get through to pete that ryan wasn't mad at him. all ryan wanted was for this situation to be sorted out. and he was beginning to lose hope that he'd be able to get through to pete within the next couple of hours.

"i can't do have a repeat of it all again." pete let a tear fall from his eye. ryan knew that pete was remembering one of his exes. she had told pete that he loved her, and pete confessed that he had reciprocated those feelings. all went well immediately after, but then the girl went around school, telling everyone that pete had come onto her and that they were over. there was no way in hell that had happened - pete wouldn't do that. no one knows why she decided to act like that. she would constantly verbally abuse pete after that. pete still hadn't forgotten. luckily, none of his relationships after that had gotten to the 'i love you' stage - pete was too scared to let it get to that point. but now it had, and pete obviously hadn't taken it very well.

"you reacted the same way to patrick as the other certain someone did towards you." ryan went back to a harsher tone. he had to get the message across to pete. he couldn't treat someone like that. and he should know that. he's been treated like that himself. he didn't want it to happen to anyone else - yet he'd just treated the person he loved in the same way.

"i know. and i didn't mean to. but it's too late to fix it now, isn't it? he's probably trash-talked me in the chat. and goddammit: he should've done. i reacted in such a shitty way." pete let more tears out. he got angrier. ryan was a little scared, but he knew that pete would never hurt anyone, despite being in this mood. ryan carried on with his flat-out telling the facts approach to this situation. it at least seemed to be getting through to pete.

"you did. and yeah, i'm supposed to be here to comfort you, but i can't deny that was you did was terrible. and i know you did it because of past experiences, but not everyone is gonna be like that. especially not patrick. you know that. and no, patrick hasn't trash-talked you in the chat. he just told us exactly what happened. exactly what you said. and he said that he feels bad for telling you to get out. but honestly, he shouldn't. you need to tell him how you feel. we can't leave this situation like this."

"yes, but i can't help but think that nothing will change at all. every time someone tells me they love me, i'll tell them the same and they'll blow up at me. ryan, i don't want to go through it again." pete sat down next to ryan, but he didn't stop fidgeting. ryan noticed that pete was picking at the skin around his nails, so he placed his hand over the top of pete's, so he couldn't move them about. pete gave ryan a quizzical look, but ryan just shrugged in response.

"i know you don't, pete. but you can't be out here explaining it to me when you haven't told patrick how you feel. if you don't tell him, nothing's ever going to be solved. and i think you know that. you just need someone to tell you. am i right?" ryan switched back to the softer tone of voice. pete had calmed down a little, and as ryan said those words, he looked down at his lap.

"you're always right with these things, ryan." pete mumbled. that's all ryan had wanted. just for pete to admit that what he did was wrong. now ryan could get to the comforting part.
