22.- Appearances are deceptive

Shortly after waking up, Vol realized that the noodle box was missing, he knew that the kid ate it. Then, Vol decided to go out and get some food for breakfast, both for him and the young marsupial. He went to the nearby market and found something to prepare for the kangaroo as breakfast that probably would like, also a T-shirt, since he found him bare-chested. After a few minutes shopping, he returned to a ZPD, that was still short-staffed at that time of the morning, and prepared food for them both, with priority to do breakfast for himself, since he considered leaving the kangaroo sleeping longer in case he needed it.

"A coffee for me... with toast... Well, all done. It's the kid's turn." He began to prepare what was necessary to make this young animal's morning one of the best he could have. He also included toasts in his diet, but considered that a natural orange juice along with heated milk and cocoa would be better. "Perfect, with this he'll be well fed." He smiled, with a warm, close and full of kindness smile.

As he took his breakfast, he went to the room where the marsupial was to give him the food. Although he'd been in the dream's world for a long time, he was still sleeping. Still, Vol waited for him to wake up, it wouldn't last long until the teenage kangaroo returned to the real world.

The young mammal was slowly opening his eyes, still with Vol's cloak on him.

"Apparently you were hungry." Vol chuckled.

At the fox's statement, the kangaroo widened his eyes and looked away. "I-I just wanted to taste it..."

Vol handed him the good smelling breakfast. "Here, have a good breakfast for you, little one." He tried to befriend the marsupial. Although reluctant, the kangaroo made the decision to take it. To Vol's surprise, when he turned around for a few seconds, the breakfast was already consumed, catching him with mouth full.

Vol's eyes widened in surprise. "Either you normally eat a lot or you were very hungry upon waking up." He laughed. "Do you want more food? Besides..." He picked up the purchased shirt and placed it in front of the kangaroo. "I'd like you to accept this gift, so you don't have to go bare-chested." His smile remained on his face.

The kangaroo finished what was in his mouth and looked at the table. "Why are you so good to me? I attacked you and you... offer me food, clothes and... give me shelter." He looked at the cloak still on him.

"I don't care what happened, what I don't want is you to be hungry or cold. You deserve good shelter and care." Vol kept showing a nice, warm and friendly smile.

The kangaroo looked up to him with bright eyes. "E-Excuse me?"

"That's right, you deserve a good life... ehm... I don't know your name." He scratched his head, feeling a bit embarrassed and blushing because of it.

The kangaroo thought about it for a moment but he decided to tell him the truth. "R-Ryan... My name's Ryan, Mr. Fox."

Vol grinned after hearing the name. "What a nice name, buddy, I like it a lot. By the way..." He approached the kangaroo, walking slowly to make him feel safe. "You can just call me Vol, the 'mister' part... makes me feel very old." He laughed as the young mammal put on the shirt.

Ryan's trust in the fox started to grow after talking. He found that Vol didn't mind what happened previously and that he wanted to take care of him. He felt comfortable, but something was on his mind and he didn't want to hide it anymore.

"C-Can I tell you something? Keep the secret for me, please."

Vol looked puzzled but kneeled down to the sitting kangaroo. "Promise, what's wrong?"

Ryan sighed and took a breath. "Those words I said on the street... and the blows I gave you... I'm not like that... I faked everything so as not to go back to a place where I don't want to be." Vol felt concerned after those words, he opened his eyes wide and his smile turned around. "I just want to go back to the one who... 'controlled' us, the one who put the headphones that I had on my ears and that you took from me."
