Stay Away from the Cigars
Strop's sobering cure was pure genius. Annie had been frightened at first, but it seemed like Tru was holding up pretty well.
When they arrived back at the hotel, Annie took Rue aside and explained what had happened.
"You'll keep an eye on him, won't you?" Rue asked. "Goodness knows I've got enough to worry about without this, too."
"Of course. I'll keep him away from the drinks...and the cigars...and the fireplaces." This is going to be a long night. If she could keep Tru from exploding, Annie would consider the night a success.
She headed for the high rollers' table, keeping one eye on Tru and one on the players. As she watched, she scribbled notes to write up an article for the Pillars later. Tallulah's girls were everywhere, distracting the guests.
Annie's eyes narrowed as she saw one girl slip money from a man's pocket while kissing him. She bit her lip and said nothing. Tru had started singing again, which she took to be a good sign. The usual yells and groans followed his musical numbers.
Rue and Ronan strolled the hotel, pausing at each attraction. Annie paused in her scribbling when she saw the way Ronan was looking at Rue.
Ooh, O'Boyle's got it bad. She giggled and looked over at Brody, who hovered on the edge of the crowd, hands stuck in his pockets in a businesslike manner. Their eyes met and his widened.
"Good lord, woman!" His mouth was hanging open. "What are you wearing?"
Annie looked down at her dress and realized it was hanging open almost as wide as Brody's jaws. "Er...a dress."
Brody shook his head and slipped out of his coat. "Here, put this on." He helped her into the coat and ignored her pout. "Are you even wearing anything under that? Don't answer that," he hastened.
Annie snuggled into the coat. "I was wearing it the way it's supposed to be worn. But if you like this better..." She shrugged resignedly, then asked worriedly, "You didn't like it?"
"Oh, I liked it fine. I'm just worried other people will like it too much." Brody brushed her hair behind her ear.
Annie beamed. "How sweet. You're worried about me."
"I'm always worried about you. Try to stay out of trouble?"
"I will."
Brody bent down to kiss her and searched her face. "Promise?"
"Promise." She nudged him away and smiled after him.
3Gun had arrived at some point with CG. Annie stalked them with her eyes, remembering the stories she had heard about those two "starting fires." I'd better keep Tru away from them.
Tru! Where was he? She glanced around worriedly, then her eyes widened and she left her place at the table.
"Tru, stop that!" She grabbed the cigar from his mouth and stuck it behind her back. "No matter how annoyed we get with you, we don't want you exploding!"
"But it was for aesthetics!"
"I don't care!" Annie made her way back to the table, leaving a saddened Tru behind. A sudden commotion at the door caught her attention.
Barton Denver and Missy entered, followed by another young woman and two men that made Annie sit up straight in her chair. She fanned herself with her hand. Goodness.
Between the two men walked Petra. She looked happy, happier than Annie had ever seen her before. I'd be happy, too, if I got to walk around with two men that handsome. She glanced around to make sure Brody hadn't seen her ogling the men and bent down to scribble a few notes.
A while later there was another commotion at the door. Annie rose and pushed her way closer, only to be met with the sight of one of the Buchanan brothers. He was immaculately dressed and had no scars on his face. It had to be Buck.
