All Bets Are Off - 1
It's a big day for Busted Gulch. The casino is opening today. Everyone, the entire town, and the riverboat folks have been invited. The doors will open at six sharp. I've slipped into the red dress, did my hair and makeup with five minutes to spare.
"Listen, if you promise to behave, then you're ungrounded from tomorrow and I'll even take you to your favorite spot outside the bakery. You can watch Gyn making your favorite muffins. What do you say?"
His eyes shone as he peered in through the office window. "but you have to behave tonight" I continued, "I know you want to but no trying to get into the casino."
CM rested his head on the window sill in agreement. I kissed his nose and placed a few strawberry muffins there for him.
BANG! Bang!
"What? You planning to break down my door?" I leaned against the door taking in the white shirt, the tie and the sweet smell of lilac. The sheriff grinned and offered me his arm. I avoided the gaping mouths, greedy glances, and the envious whispers as we strolled through town.
The casino shone like a newly installed lamp whose brightness attracted all creatures to it. The doors had opened exactly on time but we were late by a few minutes. At least I was, I guessed he had been there at the opening and then he had come to pick me up. All the tables were occupied but we were seated at the only empty one which I assumed he had reserved earlier.
"I have to leave but I'll be back soon" he explained disappearing backstage.
Looking around, I couldn't spot any of our friends or maybe they were in the other section. I hoped Annie had made her way to the high rollers table as I was depending on her for the next exclusive.
"Would the lady like to dance?" the words barged into my thoughts. Words failed me and I couldn't help but take his outstretched hand. As we began to dance Tru sang "Lady in Red". So that's where he had gone. Last time I heard that song was at the Jamboree. Everything had been different then. It was sung by someone else for someone else.
Sadly, I smiled into his chocolaty eyes and lay my head on his chest, right next to the shining star, as we swayed to the music. He hadn't understood that he had hurt me by his actions. He didn't know I was upset or maybe this was regret for what he did earlier today.
On a beautiful and magical night like this, in the arms of the man I love I felt heartbroken.
