A Promise

Breathe in, breathe out.

Ring's in my pocket.

Just one kiss.

You can do this.

What was all that gibberish

about the "heart's dare"

and prophetic kisses?

Thank Rosetta,

the fairy godmother of this story.

I've got to find Petra. Where is she?

There's Brody. Better avoid him.

My heart pounds as I look left and right.

I feel out of place...

and then suddenly I see her face.

She's sitting at a table

I wish to pull her away but don't know if I'll be able.

Seeing her takes my breath away.

But I walk up to her and say,

"Care to dance?"

She turns to me with a startled glance.

"Buck! I thought you were back...there."

She glances at my suit and hair.

"I couldn't miss the grand opening of the hotel."

She laughs. "By the way, you look swell."

I take her in my arms and give her a smirk.

"A fairy godmother did all the work."

We spin across the floor to the bar

and get a drink. Good, so far.

I slip my arm around her waist

and she looks up into my face.

We come closer, then our lips meet.

We share a kiss that is long and sweet.

Then, like Rosetta said, I suddenly know

that I never ever want to let Petra go.

"Petra..." I take her hand in mine,

slip the ring on, and watch it shine.

"Buck?" Her eyes grow wide.

For a minute I feel weak inside.

"What is this?"

"It's a promise.

A promise to stay,

come what may."

She covered her mouth with her hand.

"I...I don't understand.

You're...promising me

...not to leave?"

I nod. "I've pushed you aside too many times.

From now on it's you before me."

"Oh, Buck." Her smile was wonderful to see.

But there was still that flutter of worry.

What if she didn't feel the same way about me?
