All Bets Are Off 2

Rue was a vision. All eyes turned to her as she smiled welcoming the patrons to the casino. One of her dreams had finally come true. I had not missed the side glances that Ronan had been giving her since she had stepped out or that she was smiling at him more than usual.

Ever since her return, she was different. Her name had inadvertently been linked with every other man in town. Billy had made his own share of mistakes. Yet there was some inexplicable connection between them. Destiny had changed them both. Seeing Ronan there standing beside Rue hurt because it should be Billy. It should always have been Billy. He was like a brother to me and I could do nothing to help him.

Maybe this was for the best for both of them. Maybe their paths were different and if they were destined to be then nothing could change that.

"Are you cold?"

"No, I just ..." I whispered, "I feel like I've lost a brother, again."

"Billy?"

The warmth from his fingers over mine dispelled the fluttering of helplessness. On rare occasions, it was possible to catch the glint of concern which he masked by his tough expressions. The clamor around us which had begun to be audible started to fade.

"Ahem, I am fine." I pulled my hand away and rubbed my cheeks hoping the sheriff hadn't noticed. "It's like BG has been transported into a fairytale and tonight is the royal ball."

"Talk of princes and princesses," he nodded towards the entrance.

The Bartons had grabbed the attention of everyone in the room. Mr. Denver, an all-out gentleman, with his beautiful wife Missy dressed in red and gold, had walked in. They were followed by two handsome sons and two gorgeous daughters but Petra shone like the North Star in the night sky. The women were seated at the front table while the men left for the private room at the back.

"I find them odd."

"Odd? How do you mean? Do you have any evidence of anything?

"No, it's only a gut feeling that something is off" I replied shaking my head trying to clear my thoughts. "I always have trouble with newcomers."

"Let that go and make a fresh start. What do you say, muffin?"

I couldn't resist his smile. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Annie slip into the back room. She was on the job but it would be difficult for the men to focus with her plunging neckline. Thankfully, Brody's coat did a decent job covered her up.

"Are you going to join the high stakes fish game? Ronan has invited us."

"I've got a town to parole and Ronan is there to keep an eye on things."

No sooner had Annie got in, she was carried out by one to the Bartons and was settled next to Missy. Brody wasn't happy to find his coat discarded on the floor and left with one of Tallulah's girls. Annie followed and found her way back to the Barton's table. A rookie mistake.

"I've got to take a walk around town. Wait for me."

As soon as the sheriff left, I spotted Buck. He was back in town and talking to Petra. Neither Lou nor Bruce followed which could only mean they were either dead or soon to hang.

Myna spinning around had made me dizzy but her fainting had scared the life out of me. Luckily, the doc had finished singing. Together with AJ and Loren's help, they revived Myna to the Mayor's relief.

"Myna are you all right? Is the baby alright? Why did you faint? What did the doc say? He has checked you, hasn't he? Please don't tell me Aunt Sue is a midwife!" I blathered rushing to her.

"You look lovely tonight, CG" Myna giggled.

"er ... you look radiant" I flustered "We haven't talked since the wedding ... I hope everything is ok."

"She is more than ok!" the mayor interrupted, "if you excuse us we will be leaving. My desert rose needs her rest."

The sheriff was waiting for me. Before I could say a word he called Tru to sing a song. "Pretty Woman" always made me smile but not tonight. I was positive he had guessed I was upset, I also knew he didn't know why. Tru quietly left when the song was sung but my mood was no better.

He was the king of mixed signals. I couldn't take it anymore. I wouldn't.
