You Couldn't Make This Up
Annie might only be a budding reporter, but she was no rookie.
She quickly recognized the rumbustious commotion as an opportunity, to give the high rollers a look-see.
When Myna Order had fainted WhatsHisFace became distracted.
With the stealth of a bat and the grace of a dancer, she reacted.
The deed was done in a flash, he'd looked over his shoulder for barely a second and was none the wiser.
Seeing the door ajar, he decided it best pull it closed before Rue decided she needed a new bouncer for the door.
Annie was soon at work taking notes, this was going to be one hell of a scoop.
If this was in New York, she'd probably be nominated for a howitzer, what a coup.
Recording that Barton Denver was sat at the far end of the table, directly opposite Rue.
She saw her pick up a card and sacrifice one of her pairs, to build three of a kind.
She got the feeling that Rue wanted her to react.
And reciprocated, by shrugging her shoulders matter of fact.
The moody looking guy with one eye or a dreadful squint was quiet clearly delighted.
Upon his grisly lips, a smirk was highlighted.
The smell in the room was unpleasant, it was a mix of perfume, smoke, booze and body odour probably from the grisly old skunk.
She didn't miss a trick, noting that it seemed Denver was only playing drunk.
She was utterly engrossed as she did a loop around the table.
When she caught the buckle of a shoe in the trailing hem of her tantalizing dress and became unstable.
Instantly Annie found herself out of control and diving like a dolphin, still holding on to pen and paper as if her life depended on it.
Then as if by magic she's starring at the most handsome face, it was Bart Denver's, she couldn't believe it.
He'd swept her from the air like a feather, it was a scene from a romantic story she once been told.
And now she was held in his arms as if they were about to cross the bridal threshold.
The whole thing was happening in slow motion.
Denver hadn't planned this but welcomed the commotion.
As time stood still, they gazed intently into each other's eyes.
You'd be a fool if you missed the instant attraction, it looked like a long goodbye.
Bart asked, "What's so important about the pen and paper?
Is it a love letter?"
His voice was so smooth, all she could hear was custard and cream.
Who could blame her, she didn't want to wake from this dream?
But the perfect moment was broken as One Eye, shot from his seat.
"Shouting what's she doing in here. Is she part of some elaborate cheat?"
Bart's response was curt and quick, "What do you mean she?
Show the lady some respect, before I kick your smelly derriere from here to Tallahassee."
For a moment the tension was high, as One Eye contemplated what to do.
It didn't take him long to make the right choice, not one he might not live to rue.
Bart was happy with his begrudging apology and asked for a suspension while he escorted the lady to her table.
Annie never said a word but was a little surprised as she didn't have permission to be here, let alone here own table.
Wearing a satisfied smile, he carried Annie to the door, introducing himself on the way.
She was delighted and thanked him for his chivalry, thinking, 'oh my god what a day!'
Not wanting to release his hands from this beauty, he asked her to tap the door, it immediately swings open.
They came face to face with a very surprised Whatshisface, who stood aghast with mouth wide open.
Realizing it was Annie and that she'd somehow duped him, some harsh words he'd love to say, if only he could speak.
When she smiles and gives him a look that says, I wouldn't if I were you, turn the other cheek.
He was no fool and stepped aside to let them pass, and Bart marched on through the milling crowd, many confused, amused or simply bemused.
None more than Brody, well, in his case a better description might be unamused.
Bart walked up to his mother's table and asked her politely if Miss Annie could join them, while he finished the game.
Missy was delighted with the hidden compliment and replied, of course, she can, speaking her name.
He lowered her gently, like a piece of porcelain china into his seat.
Before leaving he said, "Please be here when I return as we already have one Cinderella" and then gently kissed the back of her hand, the scene was complete.
Missy was soon busy welcoming her into the fold and passing her a beautiful red stole, asked why not replace the gentleman's coat with this.
This reminded her of Brody and for a moment she felt a little guilty and imagined him expressing his disapproval with a hiss.
The white of her dress and the red of Missy's stole were a perfect match and she was delighted.
I guess you could say they were United.
Petra became excited when realizing it was Annie who'd been carried to their table, by Bart.
Welcoming her friend with a hug, she wondered what better way was there for her new life to start.
Someone's approaching she can hear boots on the floor, click-clack.
Petra looks up and there stands Buck.
