Meet Me on the Battlefield

My suit has tapped into the communications of my fellow Avengers. Everyone still seems in high spirits. Steve makes the calls from the ground and Rhodes from the air. I feel frozen, invisible. Wakandan soldiers rush past me and collide with the monsters on the other side. My eyes adjust to the blazing sun of home and then I throw myself into the fight. One of Thanos' dogs charges at me, and all of my pent-up anger comes surging out of me. A blade slides from my forearm and I ram it right into the chest of my attacker. Pushing it over onto the ground I continue to stab at it, even at it claws at me, I don't stop until it's movements have ceased.

"Evelyn?" I stop breathing. Turning I see that Bucky is standing a few feet away just looking at me in disbelief. There's a wave of questions about me over comms, asking for my position, how I got here... To me there is nothing right now except Bucky. I push myself up and run to him. He meets me with open arms. My helmet comes down as I crash into him. When I pull away his hand finds my face which I'm sure is a mess of blood and tears. He kisses me there and then, I should be worried about the things around us, but at this moment none of it matters.

"Ya know now is really not the time for this sort of thing." Hearing the raspy voice I look down. A Raccoon is standing right in front of us, picking off one creature after the next with a gun. I look to Bucky confused.

Bucky shrugs, "He came with Thor." As he says the name a zap of lightning comes down just to our right sending it's victims flying.

"I understand the confusion." The little animal says. "I saw you walk through that portal." He sends another spray of blaster fire on oncoming attackers before continuing. "You wouldn't have happened upon a humy, a Mutate, and a chick with anteni?"

"The Guardians." I remind myself why I'm here. I turn back to Bucky and lightly push him back. "There's so much I need to tell you."

"You did see them." I look to the little guy and bite my lip with no idea how to continue.

Bucky can tell I'm distraught. "Evelyn... What's going on?" Tony with a blade through him flashes across my gaze. I reach down to my stomach feeling sick.

"Thanos..." I shake my head. "We did our best, we really did." I look down to Rocket whose let his weapon drop. "He's coming here... For the last Infinity Stone."

"Thanos let you escape?" Rocket asks.

"Not exactly." I pause a moment. "Your friends..." I take a breath. "I think they might be dead." I had to put it bluntly. Thanos had killed his own daughter I expected no mercy from him. I see something switch in Rocket's face before he yells, and then turns to taking out every enemy in sight. Bucky and I turn our sights to the danger surrounding us as well. My suit is still slightly functioning. We fight back to back covering our Wakandan brothers and sisters.

"How the hell did you get back here anyway?" Bucky calls over the shots of his assault rifle.

"A new friend. " I say somberly. Hopefully Strange could buy us just a little bit more time so I could get to the others and warn them. "Where's Steve? I need to talk to him."

Cap comes across comms. "In the field. Nice to have you back with us Evelyn. Any chance you brought Stark along with you." I get choked up and find it hard to answer. "Evelyn?" Cap asks.

"Just a second Steve." Bucky answers for me. He knows something's wrong, he knew from the moment he saw me. He grabs my arm and starts to pull me back behind our lines. Wakandans run the opposite direction and cover us as we run deep into our lines where we're out of range of the initial attacks.

"Thanos is coming for the stone." Realizing that our time is short I start to shake.

"We know." Bucky says. He holds me steady and nods his head trying to calm me.
