Ray POV
I pulled up to the hospital building, a building I was actually used to seeing at this point. I've become pretty accustomed to this place since the incident. I had my regular parking spot. Went into the regular doors. Said hello to the regular nurse. Went up the regular elevator to the regular floor. Walked down the regular halls to the regular room. It was all too regular for me.
It's been two weeks and today Mickie was finally getting let out the hospital. She asked about her dad a couple times but no one bothered to tell her. She didn't have the same hint of happiness in her eyes since she found out about the baby. Chresanto still didn't come visit.
I got pissed everytime I thought of it. He should at least be here for her since it's his fault she was pregnant and his fault she got involved in this lifestyle.
I don't think she noticed his absence but I knew she was crazy in love with him. That, there was no denying.
Tyra copped a ride with Mickie's mom to get Mickie out. My car was carrying Mickie's belongings that her mother insisted she needed to make her stay comfortable. I had no problem with it, even if Tyra volunteered my car without asking me for permission first. I would literally go to the moon and back just for her. She needs it, she gots it.
"I can't thank you enough for this, Ray." Mickie's mother said for the tenth time since I got here. I've been carrying her bags and belongings out the room since last night. I was beginning to assume her mother brought her whole wardrobe even though Mickie wasn't in need of all those clothes. She was stuck in the hospital clothes for those whole two weeks.
She was at first forced into wearing that ugly gown but she complained about being uncomfortable with having her ass out all the time and insisted on having the shorts and matching shirt.
The nurses loved her. They even let her have a spare uniform they had lying around.
So now she wore a nurse's uniform and her short hair was wrapped in a messy bun on her head. I carried her last box while Tyra and Mickie's mom helped her walk down the hall. Mickie, being the stubborn and independent person she is, fought with them into letting her walk on her own. She was fully capable of doing it herself but due to "Safety first," her mom wouldn't hear of it.
"Bye, Mickie." One of the many nurses said as we walked past. Mickie sent her a cheeful smile and said bye.
"This isn't the last you'll see from me, Ms. Jackson." Mickie enthusiastically said, "I'm definitely going to work here later on."
"I sure hope so! You're smile could light up New York City after dark," She said. "We need people like you around here."
It's true. Mickie's personality was contagious. If she was happy, you couldn't help but to smile alongside her. She had that type of aura.
"Typhoon, what happened to Chresanto?" Mickie suddenly asked when we got to the exit of the building. Tyra stopped in her tracks and looked at me.
"Ray?" Tyra uneasily asked. Everyone stared at me. I quickly said the first lie that came to my mind.
"He got a real job to help support you, Mickie." I lied, "He's been working overtime though and when he got off work, visiting hours would be over. I was certain that one of the guys told you by now."
Mickie's eyes had a new type of sparkle in it. Like all her happiness glistened in her pupils for us all to see. Even though she tried hard not to smile, she couldn't help but to let it show.
"Well that changes er'thang." Mickie squealed. "Mommy, can we go surprise Chresanto at his job?"
I mentally face palmed myself knowing it was a silly mistake to use a pitiful lie like that to save my best friend's ass.
"Maybe tomorrow. I want you to go rest for a little while before we go visit your aunt."
If my hands weren't full with Mickie's shit, I would've done a happy dance.
"Ms. Miller," I said using her maiden name. Mickie's mother turned around and gave me a weak smile. Her exhaustion was much evident in her facial features. Bags under her eyes, dark and cloudy, chapped lips. No offence to Ms. Miller, but she looked like shit.
"I'm going to stop by my house to pick something up," I continued. "I should be at your house in half an hour." I felt bad for constant lying, but I had to do this or shit would get messy for Chresanto and Mickie's relationship.
"No, take as long as you need." Ms. Miller urged. "It's no rush. You've been a big help through all of this, I honestly couldn't thank you enough."
I gave her a half smile and kissed Tyra goodbye. Nothing major, guys. Just a kiss on the cheek. We haven't gotten that far yet but I'm definitely working on it.
"Thank you, Ms. Miller. I'll be back in the next hour."
I put the last of the material in my trunk and climbed in the driver's seat. Starting the car, I pulled out the parking lot and made my way to my destination.
Hi guys.
