Natsu woke up extra early for Gray's birthday, and set out at 11:00 am. Well, he actually woke up at 7 am but Gray was pretty adamant about staying in bed.
Or holding Natsu, who knows.
After wrapping his scarf around his neck, he opened the door and headed towards the store.
The first thing he decided would be to get Gray's gift. Natsu wasn't exactly sure what to get him, but if it was from him, Gray wouldn't mind what it was.
Natsu walked into a shop not far from home, and started browsing the items. He found some ice in the shape of a heart, inclosed in a glass box. Underneath the box there was a label. "Ice heart : ice that never melts. //20,000 jewel//
Well, it was for Gray, so it's worth the money. Natsu brought a store clerk to help get the heart and handed over the jewel.
The heart came in a simple white box, which Natsu wrapped with blue wrapping paper with white snowflakes.
With the gift safely secured under his arm, Natsu walked a couple miles away to a store that made custom cards.
"Hello?" Natsu called, as he walked into the store. A little bell with a "press for service" sign on it was at the cash register. Natsu presses the bell one, two, five, nine, fourteen times.
"What?" Some lady said annoyed. "I heard the bell, just took me a while to get over here." Natsu rolled his eyes. "Um..hi. I was wondering if you could make a card"-
"Well yeah that's what we do here." The lady interrupted.
"...for my boyfriends birthday." He finished.
"You mean girlfriend?" (Imma smack her to Jupiter)
"No, I mean boyfriend."
"You're a guy though." The lady said, eyeing Natsu up and down.
"Sure am. So how much would it be?" Natsu said, pulling out his wallet.
"For your nasty self and your equally gross boyfriend?" (Forget Jupiter, I'm smacking her to a whole other galaxy)
"Excuse me?" Natsu asked wide eyed.
"Whatever. Any certain styles?" The rude saleswoman asked.
After sorting out the card with a couple rude comments and remarks from the woman, Natsu was told the card would be ready in about 25 minutes.
Natsu walked out the store, making sure he had the gift, and walked over to the cake shop not far from there.
Natsu pushes open the glass door, taking in the sweet scent of frosting and batter. "Hey Erza." Natsu smiled as he saw the redhead looking at the display cakes. "Hello Natsu. Getting something for Gray?" She questioned.
"Yup! Are you getting your strawberry cake?" Natsu asked, walking over to the cash register to place an order. "Of course." Erza smiled.
Natsu asked for a pre-made chocolate cake. Natsu has the gift under his right arm, while he carefully carried the cake with his left hand. "Bye Erza." Natsu said, walking out. "Say happy birthday to Gray for me!" She called.
The card would be completed in about 3 minutes so Natsu was trying his hardest to make it there in time.
When Natsu opened the doors to the card shop, he tripped and the cake flew in the air, landing on the lady who was holding his card to Gray.
The lady had a fit. She yelled and screamed at Natsu. "This never happens with my straight customers!" Along with other things.
She ripped the card in Natsu's face and yelled at him as he walked out, holding the gift box to his chest.
His face held a frown, and his eyes looked full of tears, wanting to cry from that lady, not to mention he had frosting all over him.
Natsu blinked rapidly and tried to get rid of the water in his eyes. Well, he didn't have a cake or a card and it was too late to get new ones, so the gift will have to do.
On Natsu's way back to his house, the sun got covered with clouds and it started to sprinkle. "Damn it." Natsu breathed.
Natsu held the gift close to his chest with one arm, while shielding his face from the now pouring rain with his other arm.
When he was only 10 minutes away from his house, he slipped and fell on the slippery ground, causing the gift to fall to the ground with a shatter.
Carefully, Natsu opened up the gift, only to see the heart was shattered into a million pieces.
Natsu picked up the gift, and walked home with his head hung low.

When Gray woke up he saw that Natsu was no where in sight. Gray rolled over to Natsu's side of the bed, breathing in his scent. Gray was hoping Natsu would come back soon.
Today was his birthday and all he really wanted to do was lay in bed with Natsu all day and maybe go out to eat.
Gray was about to get up to go to the bathroom before hearing the front door shut.
He smiled knowing it was probably Natsu. With a stupid grin on his face he walked towards the front door to see a frosting covered and soaking wet Natsu sitting on the floor in front of the door. He held his head in his hands and he held a beat up box with half torn wrapping paper.
"Natsu?" Gray asked, walking towards him. Natsu looked and when Gray saw his face he quickly sat down next to Natsu and gave me a hug.
He looked miserable.
"What happened? Are you okay?" Gray was frantically asking questions.
Natsu merely nodded and made a small smile, hiding the beaten up box. "What's that?" Gray asked, pointing to the box.
"Huh? Oh..nothing." Natsu said sadly.
"Well it's obviously something, so let me see." Gray reached over and grabbed the box before Natsu could retaliate.
Gray opened the box to see pieces of ice. "Natsu, what even is this?" He asked confused.
"It was a heart made with ice that never melts.." He trailed off. "On my way back I dropped it and it broke." He said, looking at the ground.
"Are you okay?" Gray said, scooting closer to him.
Natsu didn't answer his question but instead told Gray about everything that happened.
About the card and the homophobic lady, the cake, the rain, and everything else he planned to do for his birthday.
Gray leaned over and kissed Natsu's cheek.
"Huh?" Natsu looked over and blushed slightly.
"Thank you." Gray said.
"But..everything went wrong." Natsu said quickly.
"Don't worry about it. Go get changed, you'll get sick idiot." Gray got up and helped Natsu stand up as well.
Gray pulled Natsu into a hug while he whispered a quiet "I love you" in Natsu's ear.
"I love you too."
