Right before the fire

The last thing Chill expected to do today, was witness a daring rescue mission. But with life, you never know what comes next. It was an ordinary day for a dragonet just over half a year old. Chill was walking with his mom. They had just finished swimming in the lake. Chill loved that lake. It was always cold, no matter what time of year it was. As he walked on with his mom, something in the sky caught his attention. A trail of smoke rose past the clouds to his right. But the thing that was weird about this smoke, was that it was dark grey instead of white, like a normal campfire.

"Mom, mom, look," Chill pointed over to his right at the smoke.

"Oh my goodness!" His mother exclaimed. She grabbed Chill, threw him on her back, and took off into the sky. Chill held on to his mom's icicle ruff as they flew the couple of blocks to the source of the smoke. It turned out to be a house that had caught fire. As they swooped downwards, ready to land, they heard a scream from inside the burning building. Seconds later, a female SkyWing with bright red scales came racing out, yelling "fire". She was carrying a small female dragonet, about Chills age, with orange scales and a red underbelly.

"Stay here," Chill's mom ordered Chill as they landed. She picked up Chill and put him on the ground in front of the main road. She then raced over to the house and started blasting it with frostbreath.

Word gets around very fast in Sanctuary. That was one thing Chill had experienced. So at this time, He could see tons of dragons flying his way to see what was happening. All the IceWings rushed in to help Chill's mom. Other dragons had brought buckets of water, and were pouring them onto the roof. As Chill watched, his mother carefully crept into the house with a few other IceWings to extinguish the fire inside. It was that moment when a section of the roof in the middle of the house collapsed.

"Mommy!" Chill yelled. He wanted to race inside to see if his mom was okay, but she had told him to stay here. And he always obeyed his mother. It was in the blood of all IceWings, never disobey an order from someone with a higher status as you. So, he layed down on the grass and waited. Time seemed to slow down as he waited on and on. It felt like hours later when the fire had been reduced to smouldering embers. But Chill's mom was still nowhere to be seen.

"Move, little IceWing!" The shout made Chill's head shoot up and he jumped to the side as a pair of RainWing doctors  carried an unconscious MudWing on a stretcher. A large piece of wood had been stabbed through the dark brown scales of her forearm, right through to the other side. After another minute of waiting, Chill couldn't take it anymore. He wandered over to look around what was left of the house. Then he wandered over to the SkyWings he had seen running out of the house. That's when Chill noticed his mom running toward him.

"Mommy," Chill called out in delight. His mom picked him up and touched her snout to his in happiness. Then, placed him on the ground.

"We should help that family," she said, looking over at the SkyWing mother and child, currently talking with Winter, the founder of the town. She walked over to them, Chill following close behind her. One thing he noticed whenever his mom saw Winter, was she would tense up. It got even worse when she was talking with him. Chill didn't know the reason. But, not wanting to be disrespectful, he didn't ask. The SkyWings accepted the offer, but wanted to stay longer to pick through the houses remains. After a minute of debating, Chill's mom also helped them look. They chose a spot on the far side of the house. All of a sudden a dragon let out a gasp and everyone else crowded around him. Chill's mom walked over  and craned her neck over the others. Chill climbed up her icicle ruff to peek at what everyone was looking at. He saw the dead, charred body of a dragon. He only got to see it for a moment because his mom pulled away. She did not like dead dragons, even when they were all burnt up. About a minute later, the SkyWings found them and they set off to Chill's house.
