"Hey, Toad. Who's that?" Chill called out after school. Aloe jumped a bit, adjusting her glasses.
"Hi, I'm Aloe," Aloe waved her slightly shaky talon, half hiding behind Toad. Robin appeared behind Chill, bounding behind Toad to get a better look at the RainWing, who was a nervous green, with some brown mixed in.
"Another RainWing? Cool! I'm Robin, and this is Chill," Robin smiled at her.
"Robin? That's my brother's name. Well, foster brother, anyways," she replied, her brown scales shifting to teal. "I'm here with a SkyWing foster family. Way safer here then the Rainforest."
"What's wrong with the Rainforest? It's amazing! Oh, do you know Lemon?" Robin asked, becoming more excited.
"Well, it's dangerous for me there because I'm colourblind. I can't tell dangerous things based on colour. I once played with a very poisonous tree frog because I couldn't tell based on the colour. Almost died. And I kinda know Lemon, yes. He's my brother. Most of my siblings have some kind of disability like mine or his. I think it's something to do with my mom sometimes eating questionable berries. I don't know. I'm not close to her, either."
"Wait, you're colourblind? What colour am I?" Chill asked.
"Well, you look... Blue? And grey.
"Technically silver," Chill looked to his underbelly, which was, in fact, silver.
"I kind of know my colours. I don't just see in black and white. I have Tritanopia, after all."
"TOAD! Someone yelled, interrupting the four. Toad whipped his head around to see his mom's boyfriend, Gator. He was tall, with dark brown scales and a very chubby, rounded build.
"The eggs are hatching!" He panted, out of breath. He didn't exercise much. "I'm going to be a dad!"
"Let's go!" Toad yelled, launching into the air, along with the other three dragonets. His step-dad not far behind.
"Come, quick!" His mom ushered them all in. Aloe was squashed against Toad as they crowded into the small room the seven eggs lay, but he didn't mind. A small, dark brown talon was poking out of the largest egg. It retreated back in, smashing more eggshell around the hole. Eventually, a tiny dragon snout poked out, struggling through the shell.
"Leave her," Toad's mom said as Toad reached towards his new sister. "She'll get out. Just watch."
Eventually, she did get out. And immediately pounced at the next egg, attacking the shell. The next dragon was smaller and cuter then the first. Toad's mom nodded as he reached towards this one. He made a small warble sound as the light brown MudWing picked up the similarily coloured dragonet.
Eventually, all the dragonets hatched. The rest were all males. Most had their father's dark brown scales, including one who looked very weak. The bigwings poked him for a while, then lowered her head sadly. Toad knew he wasn't going to make it. But on the bright side he had six new siblings.
"Now, we need names!" Gator said, looking at his new children with fascination.
"Muddy!" Robin called. "Dirt! Muck!"
"Better names," he replied.
"So cute!" Aloe grinned, booping her snout against one of the baby's. "I definitely chose the right dragon to be friends with. At the right time, too. I think you should call this one... Tadpole."
"Well, we did have a few names lined up, but that's good, too. I like Tadpole," Toad's mom smiled. "I was expecting more girls, but I think we'll call her Dragonfly. Now, the others..."
She continplated the other's names for a moment, but eventually settled on Landslide, Marshbird, Pondweed, and Creek. Toad was ecstatic to have new brothers and a sister to play with and teach and watch grow up. He held Marshbird, the cute, second hatched one. He was almost asleep in his talons.
"How can something this tiny be so extremely cute?" Robin asked, holding Creek, who was a spitting image of his mom.
"I know, right?" Chill smiled down at Dragonfly.
Toad was going to have fun being a big brother.
