The RainWing with the colour problem: Toad

Overall, the LeafWings were pretty great. They were instantly the most popular dragons at school. Buckthorn loved sports, and he was one of the best players. Meanwhile, Goldenrod loved hanging out with other dragons. She and Summer had become great friends.

Meanwhile, Toad's siblings were going to hatch any day now. A small crack had  even appeared on the largest egg.

But he had no time to think about that right now. He had to get to his art class. And to both his dismay and delight, he found the teacher had made a seating plan. He had no friends in this class, so it didn't really matter, anyways.

He found himself in the back and centre of the room. There were decorative banners all around the room, and there two behind this desk. The first held a mountain range, with three full moons hanging above it. One of the mountains held a cave mouth. Toad assumed it was a testament to the Dragonets of Destiny. The other held the SandWing Queen, Thorn, standing on a rock, while three other SandWings, he guessed Burn, Blister, and Blaze, bowed below her.

"Oh, hello," A flustered looking RainWing grinned, sitting down beside him. She was short and pretty average looking, with a pair of dark brown glasses that curled around her checkmark shaped horns. As she settled in, her scales turned different shades of green.

"Hi," Toad smiled. He was about to introduce himself, when the teacher announced they were doing a free paint. Toad rushed to get the good paint pots, while the RainWing got paper, paintbrushes, and two pots of water to wash the brushes.

They sketched silently for a while. Toad drew a lakeside scene, complete with mountains in the background and wild flowers on the shore. He quickly finished the drawing, and began painting. The RainWing also finished her sketch, a SkyWing and SeaWing flying together. But as soon as she finished, she walked up to the teacher.

"Fifteen minutes left!" she called as the RainWing returned. "And make these good. You'll be showing the class."

The RainWing, Toad noticed, picked up the pot of orange paint and stared at the stripe across the base of it intently. Her arms, ruff, and eye ridge turned a mix of purple and orange.

"Um excuse me," she tapped him on the shoulder, before resuming her staring. "Is this pink?"

"Uh, no, that's orange," he looked at her, before pointing out the pot with the pink stripe. "This is pink."

What an odd question, he thought. She must be joking around.

"Oh. Thank you! The two look the exact same. I couldn't tell them apart if my life depended on it. Same with yellow and white. Sorry if I'm annoying," she said quickly. "The teacher just told me to ask my partner for help."

"Huh? They look completely different," he said, looking between the two colours as the RainWing grabbed the pink.

"Oh, I guess I should tell you. I have tritanopia. I can't see certain colours you can. I think I only see in red, pink, blue, purple, white, and black. I don't know. I've never seen in normal dragon vision."

"Oh, that's cool. What col-" Toad stopped himself from asking what colour he appeared to be. "I mean, are you new here? We don't have many RainWings here?"

"Oh. I'm Aloe. And I am new here. I'm currently living with a foster family. I almost ate poisonous berries one too many times because I can't tell the safe green ones from the not safe blue ones. They say it's safer for me here. How long have you lived here? What's your story?"

"I'm Toad. I've lived here almost all my life. My mom wanted to raise dragonets instead of staying with her siblings. I found my two best friends almost immediately. I had a third best friend, but she murdered someone which a brick and ran away. It's a whole other story."

"Oh... Wow," Aloe gasped.

"Well, I have seven siblings on the way. They're going to hatch any day now. I'm excited for that," Toad jumped in quickly.

"Oh, I love dragonets! I want a whole bunch when I grow up. And you said you have two best friends? You should introduce me. I don't really have that many friends here at the moment myself," the green RainWing gained a swirl of pink to her scales. Excitement or happiness? He didn't know much about RainWings scales.

"Okay, sure!" Toad grinned at her. I can introduce you to them at lunch. He wanted to ask so many questions about her colourblindness, but he knew she didn't have the answers herself. "Uh, are you able to camouflage? Because you don't know what colour the background is?" He finally blurted out.

"Oh, yes, I can. There's a blind RainWing in the rainforest who taught me how," she said, closing her eyes. She muttered something to herself, and her scales slowly began shifting to the pale tan colour of the wall behind them, her talons into the mahogany of the table. It was so cool, how RainWings could just do that.

"I just have to close my eyes and let the colours wash over me. It's kinda hard to explain. If I try to force it..." Her scales went a shade of white, with a small pinkish twinge, her talons going dark purple. She wasn't camouflaged at all.

"Hmm, interesting," Toad replied, finishing colouring the water of his lake. "But yes, I can take you to meet my best friends, after class."
