"Mom, I'm ready."
I say as I reach the bottom step of the stairs, body entirely wrapped  in my favorite white comforter.

Mom is sitting on the living room couch with a bowl of cereal, wrapped as well in her own thick
blanket. The television is turned on the  news channel, but it's clear she isn't watching it.

When she sees me, she smiles.
"Cereal?" She offers.

I nod gratefully, "yes, please."

"Alright," she stands up from her seat, "stay here, hon. I'll just get you a bowl."

I take a seat on the couch, leaning my  head back as I listen to the newscaster report on a full moon prediction a week from now.

호시
The young woman is dad's new wife.
And the little kid, age seven or eight, is dad's new son.

A brother.
Step-
brother.
That I never knew of.

"How's school, son?"
Dad begins when everyone has left the room.

'We'll give you some time to talk. It's been quite a while, after all, hasn't it?' Dad's new wife had told me.

This is the first time I've met her,
seen her. And yet she acts as if she's known me for years.

"Fine," I reply.

Dad is wearing a smile.
A smile that is pretending to not know about what he had done in the past.
A smile that a father should give to his child, but is strange to me, since I rarely saw one like it.
It was a smile that made me feel even angrier at him. A more intense feeling I almost don't recognize it.

"Heard you got in that performing arts school," he says. "What's your major?"

"Dance."

"Dance? Er.. what kind of dance?"
His smile falters a tiny tiny bit.

"Hip hop. Pop. Sometimes, interpretive."

"Oh, good," dad says as he lets out a sigh of obvious relief. His smile grows bigger. "Your mother did something right for once."

My fists clench at his reaction and I bite down on my lip to stop myself from exploding.

I knew it.
He came here to check on me.
Not to see if I was doing well.
But to check if I was still gay.

Before I can say anything else, he asks,
"So, is there anyone you're seeing now? A girl, perhaps?"
