Axel

Blood spilled into my mouth, making me want to gag. I threw the wolf's carcass to the side as the light slowly faded from his eyes.

I smelled at least 100 wolves within the vicinity. They were all headed in the direction of the pack. Probably trying to overwhelm our protective barrier and destroy our pack. I killed one after another, never stopping. I needed to put as many down as I could.

I approached the next wolf, when excruciating pain ripped through me. It ripped at every fiber of my being and took the breath from my lungs.

Something was seriously wrong.

ASHLYN?!

I felt like I was going to die as the pain cascaded down upon me like whips on a person's back.

My wolf let out the most sorrowful and howl I have ever heard in my whole life.

The ground shook as if it was awoken up from a great slumber. The forest quaked in fear as the roar echoed outwards. Leaves shook from their branches and wolves retreated in the forest.

Get a grip, I tried to reason with my wolf, but he was losing it as my own human consciousness began slipping in and out of his turmoil.

We don't have time for this. We need to find her. NOW. My command seemed to have momentarily snapped my wolf out of his grief.

He took off into the wolves in search of her. My human side was drowning in my wolf's emotions and was slowly being taken over.

It's been said that the only way to cure a wolf's broken heart was to kill him.

I had to shake the thought away. I was slipping and sliding deeper and deeper into my animal self. Once we joined together there would be no revival. This can't be how my story ends.

My wolf caught whiff of Ashlyn's scent and we were able to track her easily. The amount of her blood in the air was making my wolf see red. I clung to consciousness, as his emotions assaulted me. I've never battled with my animalistic half like this before. He was the ocean and I was getting lost in the waves.

We started climbing the hill that lead to the pack. They were so close. The pack was just over this hill.

The smell intensified the closer to the top we got. It was at the very top of the hill that we spotted her.

Oh God.

There, slumped on a tree was Ashlyn. Blood stained the right side of her face and her mouth trailing down to her t-shirt. Her head was leaned to side and facing her chest. She had long since lost consciousness. Her beautifully curly hair was whipped up by the wind creating a halo around her. She looked dead.

My wolf let out another blood curdling sorrowful wail. Every wolf with the vicinity stopped and looked. The battle temporarily paused, due to one wolf's sorrow.

I hypnotized by Ashlyn's crumpled and life-less body, my thoughts circling around in my head. I peeled my eyes away from her and behind Izzie and Becca took in their surroundings. Wolves were everywhere, just watching them mourn. One pawed the ground as they got ready to take their next kill. One wolf with red eyes, stood out from the pack.

The red wolf looked familiar, but I couldn't place it. He definitely wasn't from my pack, but I knew him from somewhere.

One impatient wolf couldn't stand waiting and rushed the girls. My wolf and I raced to meet him but the red wolf snapped his neck with ease. We stopped short. What the hell? The other wolves began to walk back in forth in front of the red wolf, unsure of what to do.

Every now and then they would pause and look at the wolf, then shake their heads and keep pacing. They looked confused.

My wolf and I decided to act on their confusion. We boldly walked into the clearing, the wolves watched but did nothing. All hope started to drain from my body as I approached Ashlyn.

Blood was caked on the side of her lips and her head hung at an awkward angle. Izzie and Becca made room for me as I came closer.

I felt a push on my mind and I let my guard down. The foreign wolf spoke to me.

He sent pictures of us leaving with the girls on my back, all except for Ashlyn. He pictured her being left behind.

I snarled at the thought. I sent a picture back of me tearing into him. He seemed exasperated by the image and tried again.

Only an Alpha or an Idiot wouldn't be scared of my threat. I looked up at him. Who was he?

He sent images of hundreds of wolves pouring out of the trees. And then an image of him running with us. Izzie and Becca on his back while I carried Ashlyn.

I stared at him, but conceded. I didn't know this guy but for some reason he was willing to help. The wolves around him seemed just as confused by our conversation. They didn't know what was being said, but they knew we were speaking.

He may not have been the Doctor, but he surely had control of all the wolves around him. They all looked to him waiting for their next move. There were 6 of them, and one red eyed wolf.

I looked over at the girls and Izzie looked at the wolf in bewilderment. She looked at him as if she recognized him, her face was full of fear as she steadily backed up. Her arms came up as if to protect herself.

The wolf looked at Izzie and crazy enough, tucked his tail between his talk and lowered his head to her. I almost passed out from sheer shock. An Alpha bowing to a female human?

Ice coursed through my veins as realization coursed through me. They're mates.

The wolves paced in behind the red wolf, watching as they started to make sense of the situation. They looked between Izzie and the red wolf and disgust started to fill their eyes. They were seething with rage.

I nudged Izzie into the direction of the wolf, who was now in a laying down position for her to get on.

I laid down on the ground as Becca tried to placed Ashlyn on top of me.Her limbs limp as Becca dragged her over. Becca pulled Ashlyn's body across my back, so that it looked as if Ashlyn was just taking a short nap.

Then she went over to the red wolf and climbed on behind Izzie.

Where the hell was Kyle?

The thought randomly popping in my head. I couldn't smell him anywhere.

We ran up the final part of the hill and down the rest of it. The other wolves stayed behind as their Alpha left with humans on his back.
