I cannot wait to be back on campus. The thought settled deep within my mind and overrode any other thoughts I had. I was practically bouncing in my seat as I thought about finally going to college.
These last three month had been a major drag. I looked out the window of the car taking in the familiar views of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. My Mother was in the driver's seat while my brother was in the back.
"Calm down, Ashlyn," my mother scolded me with a shake of her head. I tried to take her advice, but I couldn't help it.
" I cannot wait," -I started to say out loud to my family, but was interrupted.
"for College" my little brother finished for me with a little huff at the end. I turned around in my seat and took a good look at my 17 year brother. My eyes filled my mock pity as the longer I gazed at him.
"You just don't understand, Jason," my big sister voice on 110% power, "because you've never been to college before. You don't realize how much freedom comes along with it. How much awesomeness is associated with it. How many cute boys are-." I stopped mid sentence, as the college came into view. I was home.
I was starting my second year of college, and I was as excited as a freshman. I just wanted my freedom back, and my friends. Staying in close contact with my friends from High School proved harder than I initially thought. Some people got new phone numbers, other people moved away, and then there were the people I hid from when spotted in CVS. It had been a lonely Summer to say the least. I think my brother had gotten a little annoyed with me for tagging along with him so much. It's sad to say, but I hung out with him and mom more than anyone else.
We passed under a large red and gold banner with big blue letters that read, 'Welcome to Westwick University.' People were waving on either side of the arch way with big smiles on their faces. Huh, I thought to myself, the University really went all out this year. The main road was lined with red, gold, and blue balloons. There were also signs directing parents to where they can drop off their kids along the road.
WestWick University was located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida with a total of 40,122 undergraduate students. The campus was large, and the school went to no expense boasting about it. The decorations were a little over the top, if you asked me. 'It wasn't like this last year,' I thought to myself.
We rounded the corner and I saw the residence hall that I would be residing in. There were people with, 'Westwick University' logos stamped on their shirts, standing about under the awning of the building, waiting for incoming students. The awning had a banner that read, 'Welcome to Walsh Hall.'
"I can see why you love it here," my brother said in awe looking around the campus.
"I know, right?" I boasted to my little brother, with my head held high.
"Well," my mom pulled into the nearest parking spot. " These bags aren't going to unpack themselves."
My brother sighed and hopped out the car. I opened up the car door and jumped out the car excited for the new semester. I took in a deep breath of the rich florida air, and sadly the florida air and I didn't agree. I started to cough vigorously, making loud hacking noises. The people standing in front of the building started to look at me with concern, as my brown skin starts to get a red undertone. Jason rounded the car to where I stood and thumped me on the back a few times, knowing his hits were way too hard to be helpful.
"That's what you get for boasting," Jason said, sticking out his tongue and holding one of my boxes. "God, doesn't like ugly, Ashy."
I glared at him ready to strangle him for hitting me so hard on the back.
