Axel
The man on the cliff looked down and spotted me. His eyes locked onto mine, his face twisted with confusion and cold anger.
"Why haven't you shifted?" His voice soft, but his powerful voice boomed out into the silence, slicing the air. I could see him trying to analyze my wolf, but I couldn't move. Even though his voice was almost melodic his face was far from it.
He was tall with shoulder length black hair. He was pretty young too, probably just reaching 30. However, his power told of years much greater than 30 years old. His eyes were black voids as well, and skin white as snow. He wore all black with a long black leather jacket completing his ensemble. He would give the characters in the Matrix a run for their money.
I stood frozen in place. The sheer amount of strength it took to lock eyes with this mysterious man was baffling. I've never felt power like this before. Every muscle in my body was telling me to bow my head and look away, the only thing that forced me to keep making eye contact, was the sheer will of my wolf. He would not back down and I had a feeling he would rather die than bow down to another wolf. I just wished my human half was as brave.
"Shift," he whispered into the wind, not waiting for my response.
This time I was better prepared for the wave of bone crushing power that ascended down upon me. My wolf held its ground, not falling to the ground this time, but still shaking with uncontrollably with the pain. A whimper escaped our mouth as we tried to manage the pain.
I felt the air shift around me and the boulder of power weighing down on me was lifted.
"Who are you?" His voice carried with the wind, sounding like a melodic tune. It seeked to lull me in with it's charm and then slowly suck me dry. For some strange reason, it was working. I felt the intense need to answer his question honestly. What the hell?
It was at that moment, that I felt that I overstayed my welcome. I bolted back towards the way I had come in. My wolf sent waves of shame at my action. But, what could I do? There were at least 60 of them and there was no way I would live to see another day if I fought them all. That's not even including whoever that man was standing at the top of the cliff.
On my left we started to feel the presence of a wolf slowly pulling up to my flank. I guess that guy sent his minions after me. His jaws snapped near the heels of my paws. What the heck? How did he catch up so fast.
I shook off the questions and focused on running. It was about 2 minutes later that I realized two things. One, there were a good amount of wolves trailing me and my chances of escape were slim to none. Two, I had no idea where I was at within the safe zone. The blood from the wolves was messing with my tracking skills and it felt like it was all around me.
There was no way I'd be able to outrun them for too much longer. The wolf closest to me launched himself at me. His jaw locked on my back left paw and I could hear the bones crunch between his teeth. My wolf roared in anguish. Unable to run anymore we turned around to face him. The other wolves only minutes away from us. We turned around and got a clear view on his neck and went in for the kill. His neck snapped under the pressure of our teeth. We threw him to the side and took a quick look at our leg. It looked like a chew toy at the moment. Yeah, there's no way we're running with that.
Dizziness started to settle in as we looked at our mangled leg. The smell of blood was overwhelming and at this point I didn't know if it was my blood or his blood that was causing me to react in such a way.
The slight dizziness I had was turning into straight nausea and I felt as if I would black out at any moment. I started to back up on my three good legs, while the other one dragged painfully behind. The more I backed up the stronger the smell of blood got. The other wolves were seconds away and I felt my hope start to dwindle. Some Alpha I am. I get a broken leg and now I'm out for the count. Is this really all that I am made of? I realized that for one of the first times in my life that I was afraid. I could really die here.
The wolves were so close to me now that I knew that running wasn't an option. I sighed and took my last step back ready to give up when I lost my footing. We went hide first sliding down the muddy terrain of the swamp. Hitting trees and rolling into sticks and branches. Am I really falling down a hill in Florida? It's supposed to be flat lands. I hit a semi soft surface and came to a stop with a thud. I reached back trying to find my footing when I touched something that felt like... hair?
We turned around and saw that the thing that we bumped against was actually a body. Shocked rocked through my body and I attempted to hobble away. It was a girl, she was no older than 13 years old. She has claw marks across her neck, and it looked like she bled out from her wounds. This is what the doctors people are about. They massacre people just with the thinking that they are superior than others.
I felt sick to my stomach at the sight. As if sensing my sickness my wolf shifted us into my human form, and I heaved. Letting go of all of the food I had eaten today. I wiped my mouth and tried to stand. I reached my hand behind me and grabbed onto the nearest thing I could find to give me balance. My leg leg looked horrible. The bone jutting out of the skin in my calf. This was going to take a while to heal.
I'm an Alpha. I should have been able to protect myself better. I should have been able to take that wolf down easily. Who am I going to be able to lead, if I can't even take down one wolf without being injured.
I sighed and turned around, attempting to get my bearings together. I tried to get my footing right, but the wrong was unstable. I fell onto all fours. When I looked up I came face to face with a man's face. But, it was distorted, and bloated by death. The close proximity to the corpse had be scrambling backwards. His chest cavity open for the world to see. My attempt at running, put a strain on my left leg. I fell immediately and felt something squishy underneath me. I forced myself to look down and I saw another corpse this time a middle aged women. My thoughts grim as I finally started to take in my surroundings. The smell of blood overwhelming all of my senses. There were corpses everywhere. I stared up towards where I assumed I fell from and realization dawned on my. This is a gravesite. I could tell that this was a man made ditch, and it was huge. There were at least 25 bodies down here with me. They were piled on top of one another and I was just the icing on the bloody cake.
I looked up just in time to hear a wolf's howl pierce the air. Great. The howling grew louder and was echoed by many. I looked around me and knew that I had no other choice. I stuck my fingers into the throat of the carcass closest to me and smeared as much of the blood as I could onto myself. I needed to mask my scent and this was the only way I knew how. With the smell of blood around me, I should be able to blend in.
I could hear the wolves getting closer, their loud pants sounding like they were a second from finding me. I laid back and closed my eyes.
I felt eyes above me and I knew that the wolves had arrived. I started to feel waves of power start to bombard me. Then I heard his voice.
"Where is he?" His voice still light as a feather.
"I don't know Beta." A female voice answered. "We tracked him to here, but the with the smell of so much blood his scent got lost."
"It's fine." His voice becoming even more melodic, if that was possible. "You did all you could."
"I actually think it's time for your break."
"Huh, sir?" She obviously didn't know how to take his command. "I don't need a break sir. I feel fine."
I heard the gasping of breath and the next thing I heard ran my blood cold.
"Yes, yes you do" His voice sounded like the creepiest song I ever heard. "If you can't find one measly wolf than you you can't be apart of our revolution. This may be too much for you and It seems as if you need a break."
The heard the snap of a neck and the body of the she-wolf was added to our the pile of the dead.
I heard a sigh above me and the crunching of dirt as he walked away.
I opened my eyes and looked straight into the eyes of the she-wolf. My energy too spent to look away. She looked to be about my age, and the more I looked at her the more I recognized her. She was in my Statistics class sophomore year. Her long curly blond hair, cascading down her back. I felt an immense amount of guilt at the sight. If I hadn't been at the wrong place at the right time, she would still be alive. I felt my face growing wet and I did the only thing I could. I pretended to the corpse, that I felt like on the inside. My wolf whined inside my head. Is this what an alpha is supposed to be?
