In the background is the gazebo.
Your shadow lingers as I approach.
There's anticipation in the air,
And a note in my hand.
-
Our hearts are racing for different reasons.
At the picnic table we sit.
I have to do this for me.
It's selfish but the only way out.
-
Otherwise, we'll keep running down the same streets.
At the time I did it for me.
All I wanted was the best for you.
-
Best, for me, wasn't you.
Quivering, my voice abandoned me.
Potential words kept building at my throat.
Until finally, kinetic frustration admitted defeat.
-
Our laughs followed my frustrated result.
Genuine smiles and lighter air existed in our atmosphere.
On this day, we would go separate ways.
Courtesies would be exchanged.
-
That was the day I walked away.
Good Bye. The words that helped me spread my wings.
In the direction of promise, I soared.
And for the first time I didn't look back.

Inspired by 'Not The Girl For You' written by Bidiyakdamian. Written in 'Liberation: A Poetry Collection'.
Recently, I wrote about a time My Foundation was My Kryptonite. This is about the day I chose myself over her. It took five years for me to choose myself. My Kryptonite and I were toxic. Had I not walked away we both wouldn't have grown. Now, she is My Foundation and a friend that I will never lose.
