A knock came from the door.
Taya looked at Harper and met the girl's terrified eyes with her own calm ones, hiding her own panic for Harper's sake.
"Wickerson, can we help you?" Matilda's voice asked, trying to stay light. Taya watched from the crack between the wall and the painting.
"We know they're in here." Wickerson responsed, pushing in with another guard on his heels.
"Who?" Nick, Matilda's husband asked innocently.
"The outsiders, one of the 44." The nameless guard stated. Taya was able to make out Johnson on his outfit.
"You've refused treatment enough to be hospitalized for over a year in your lifetime. Just tell us where they are and no one gets hurt." Wickerson said calmly.
"What you're doing to those kids is wrong." Nick growled and the men's hands rested on their holstered guns.
Harper and Taya shared worried glances.
"Those kids killed ten of our people. They tell you that?" Johnson questioned and was met with a shocked silence. Taya cursed quietly.
"You want to tell us where they are now?" Wickerson asked.
The couple was silent. Wickerson sighed and pulled out his gun.
"Don't make us do this the hard way." Wickerson said, his voice gruff.
"We can't let you kill those kids." Nick shook his head.
"What about you Matilda?" Johnson asked softly to the cracking woman.
"Fine." Wickerson growled and the shot cracked through the air, causing the girls to jump.
"They killed him." Taya whispered in shock to inform a blind Harper. Taya's wide eyes watched the slumped over form of the man that had dug out the hideout they were currently stationed in.
Matilda let out a cry, her hand shooting to cover her mouth.
"Tell us where they are." Johnson demanded, his voice cruel.
"Matilda looked up with hatred in her tearful eyes.
"5. 4. 3. 2. 1–."
"Wait!" Taya had pushed out of the hiding before he could finish his countdown. Taya made sure they couldn't see Harper and rushed forward.
"Leave her alone, okay. You got me." Taya held up her hands. Wickerson tucked away his gun to grab his cuffs.
However, he never got to reach them as Taya grabbed a mug, breaking it on the edge of the table and drove it into his neck.
Taya didn't give Johnson time to react as she jabbed her elbow into his face, grabbing him as he stumbled back, tackling him to the ground.
Taya's hands wrapped around the man's neck, suddenly an intense and violent anger overtaking her as she remembered herself on that table, unable to fight back.
She could fight back now.
And she did, until she was sure the man was dead, and then some.
Taya collapsed next to him, her breathing heaving from the effort it took, not only to kill a man with her bare hands, but also to contain her emotions.
She looked up and met the eyes of Matilda. She looked scared of Taya, but Taya could tell her hatred for the men who killed her husband outweighed it.
"We need to hide these bodies." Taya panted.
"My fellow citizens, this is your president speaking. I have news to share with you... that will change all of our lives forever. For 97 years, Mount Weather has been our home. It's kept us alive, but it has also held us captive. Most of us have made peace with what we've had to do to survive. We've done these things for one reason. So that our people could someday return to the ground. That day is today. Before my friend, Lorelei Tsing was murdered by the Outsiders still at large in this mountain she found a cure. It was in their bone marrow. This has been the dream of our people since the bombs. But to reach it now, I need your help. The 44 criminals that eradicated Level 5 killing 15 of our people..." Cages voice came over the intercom
