People are born with a very unique tattoo on the ankle that nobody else has but you.
Everytime you fall for someone, (not necessarily soulmates, just whoever you fall in love with) their tattoo shows up somewhere on your body.
Moreover, when you do end up finding your 'soulmate', their tattoo will appear right above where your heart should be. Additionally, as your love for one another deepens and grows, the tattoo branches out further, becoming into more complex and gorgeous patterns/colors; developing a symbolism/representation of your own love story with one another.
