In this world, the heart inside of you is your soulmate's heart; beating in real time. So whatever your soulmate is feeling, you get to experience it as well. The feeling of your soulmate's death is also possible.
As it feels as if you're the one dying.
Bonus: I'm guessing when your soulmate dies before you, your life span isn't affected by it. Your heart then starts beating as your own after their death. Unless you want to make a story where this world is even more cruel and takes you along with your soulmate if either of you dies. Even though you two may not have met yet.
