My idea/Inspired from 'A Thousand Pieces of You' book series:In this world, different universes actually exist. Travelling to a different universe is more than possible, and is actually encouraged and very common in most parallel world's societies. Any working adult can buy a device that let's them travel to any dimension with ease. Similar to the functions of a GPS and a teleporter of some kind.
This device was made due to the population loss a certain universe suffered from, caused by a virus/war/natural disaster, etc. (options vary) Which led the government to invent a device that lets the remaining people visit any kind of existing dimension in order to meet someone, all to help the population grow. But the government keeps track of the people who come in and out.
There are also multiple universes that are allied with this universe. Basically allowing their people to breed with them, in return for valuables and resources.
Basically the rules are, anyone over 20 (and are physically healthy enough to bear a child or produce healthy sperm) are allowed to cross over the dimensions of their choosing. I'm kinda lacking in ideas for this, but maybe these dimension travelers are given years (8 years is the limit) to try and find a partner to breed with, all while doing daily reports of their current status back to the original world. Only until they have found a partner, they are then given the chance either go back to their original world with their partner to have children, or to only take the child with them, if the partner refuses to leave.
Also another thing; when you travel to a parallel world, you take form of the parallel version of yourself in that world. But if your parallel self is already dead in that universe, you can't enter that world anymore. And if you somehow die in your parallel's body, your soul dies along with it (unless you teleport back to your own world before that happens)
To add more to it, you can never return to a world you've already been in before. Once you leave, there's no coming back forever. And if you refuse to leave even though you've completed your tasks, and end up wanting to stay in that world forever, it's not like you can anyway. Because your life span shortens faster the more years you stay there. That's why 8 years is the recommended limit for a stay. Either you die out or the government comes and chases you down to return you back to the original world.
Scenarios:
- you end up falling in love with someone, only
to find out that they are infertile. You end up sacrificing everything to stay in that world with your lover for as long as you can. Even though you know you have to die young.- You get involved in an accident that for sure would have left you dead. But as a panic response, you teleport back to your original world. Saving you from an early death. As a result, you are left to suffer the pain from leaving your partner forever without having the chance to even say goodbye. What's worse is that your partner would get the news of 'you' dying.
- As soon as you turned 20, you were one of the first volunteers that offered to travel dimensions. However, your goal wasn't to find a new partner. It was in hopes to meet the parallel version of your previous, deceased partner as a way to cope with the loss.
- you decide to travel dimensions with your best friend. Over the course of a couple years, neither of you are unable to fall in love with anyone no matter who it was. It's because you two have fallen for each other instead.
- Scenario where someone successfully makes a child with their partner from another universe. But the spouse doesn't want to leave their home, and wants the baby for themselves.
- As soon as you 'merge' with your parallel self's other body, you soon find out that your parents/guardian in this dimension are uncomfortable of the fact that you aren't actually their child. That you're someone else from another world. Paranoid, they try and keep you locked in the house to keep you out of trouble. Making it hard for you to find love.
- Someone already being in love
with someone else from their original world.
Both of you were forced to travel dimensions.- You travel a new universe and end up meeting your ex's parallel version. This time, they actually treat you right. Little do you know it is actually your ex in their parallel's body. They didn't tell you it was really them because they didn't want you to hate them. Regretting their past actions and not knowing how to make it up to you, they keep it a secret. That is until one day you find out.
- The spouse's parents not wanting to let their child go to a different world to stay there forever.
- A dense dimension traveller spending years in a universe trying to find love, alongside a friend they meet in that world. For years they travel together and slowly end up falling in love. But neither realize it and mistake it as a friendly type of love, because both of them are actually really dense. It's only in the dimension traveller's eighth and final year; on the last day, that they suddenly confess once and for all.
- You travel dimensions only to find out that your parallel self had a bad reputation with other people. You are tempted to move to another dimension, but end up staying because you/your family in this world is super rich, unlike in the original world. (or you were super famous, etc.)
So naturally, you take your time, but still plan to only stay for a month more. That is until you meet someone who actually ends up falling for you, even though you have a bad reputation.- After your medical/health tests, you find out that you are infertile and are unable to travel worlds. Longing for adventure since you were little, you were heartbroken to be able to only stay in this world forever and will be unable to experience something incredible. But one of your friends (or your crush) who was one of people allowed to travel, ends up sneaking you a dimension traveller device.
