When we get back to the cabin, there’s an unfamiliar white car parked in the driveway that instantly sends Rob and I swarming into the house in skepticism.
Dane is usually really good about letting us know when we have planned company; It’s pretty essential when you’re pulling the kind of shit he does. Unexpected guests are usually bad guests.
Rob does a once over of the cabin as I rush upstairs to check on Jena and find Dane. He was here when we left, and his truck is still out front, so he’s got to be here.
“Get the fuck out!” Dane snarls as soon as I swing open the door to the master bedroom. His voice is... odd. It’s angry, but also a little distressed and panicked.
Sierra, who stood leaning up against the dresser beside him with her arms folded over her chest, quickly makes her way over to me until she can shove me out the door following close behind me.
“What the fuck is going on?” I ask, cursing myself for not having seen more when I opened the door. “Who’s in there?”
Sierra shrugs, but proceeds to respond. “Dane’s doctor friend, I guess?” she says, leading me down the stairs and back out to the living room. “I guess Jena has been breaking into his stash. He went upstairs after I got here and started yelling about her seizing or something... I guess she got into a little too much.”
...what?
Panic instantly rises in my chest. Why wouldn’t he take her to the fucking hospital?
“Is she okay?! Ohmigod, the baby!” I say, sounding more panicked than I intend to. “Is the baby okay?"
Sierra shoots me a weird look just as Rob emerges from the screen door leading out back. “I don’t know, the doctor just got here a little bit ago…” she says, having to physically sit me down on the couch so she can brush me off and make her way over to Rob.
A stupid familiar smile spreads across her lips as she brushes up against his side. She looks like Jena when she transforms into that cute, overconfident girl that could get all the guys she wanted with the bat of a lash.
He’s unimpressed, and more focused on asking me what’s going on with his eyes than paying any attention to her. He still plays nice with her though because that’s just the kind of guy Rob has become.
“Hey Robbie!” she says in a voice that sounds more desperate than the flirty tone I’m sure she intended.
I roll my eyes.
I vaguely remember Sierra talking about her crush on Rob one time when she shared the bag of heroine she found in a restroom at the Eagles stadium during one of her runs. It never really crossed my mind again after that because I was way too high, but I’m immediately as annoyed as I would be if it were something I always knew of.
“What’s up with the white car out front?” he asks in response to her, subtly but certainly turning her down much to her dismay.
She pouts, positioning herself up against the wooden counter instead. “It’s a friggen doctor, damn!” she exclaims, crossing her arms over her chest as if to be offended that all of our attention won’t land on her alone. “-the junkie over-junked, Mr. Softy up there lost his shit about it, and called in Dr. Quack for a quick checkup. Can we move on now?”
Rob shoots me a look I can only hope Sierra doesn’t catch onto. She’s too much of a wildcard to trust with any information, so I’d rather her not know about any of this Jena, Rob, Dane triangle going on…
“The baby dead?” Rob tries to ask nonchalantly, though I can definitely sense the slight panic in this voice.
Thankfully, I think it’s something only I catch onto.
“What’s up with everyone’s fucking obsession with this kid?” Sierra responds almost immediately, rolling her eyes and practically stomping over to the refrigerator. She pulls out a bottled water, twisting it open before taking a sip and turning back to us.
Rob glances over to me, worry in his eyes though he covers it with a casual laugh.
“You are so funny, Si. Your little attitude kills me…” he says, his tone transformed from the one he just held. He flashes her a smile I know is meant to distract her, and I can’t help from silently thanking him as it effortlessly plays out.
“Awe, Si?!” she gushes, clenching her arms to her chest momentarily before she makes her way back over to him. “I love your nickname for me, Robbbbbbieeee! Tell me about my little attitude!”
This is definitely awkward, but needless to say- I’ve sat in on some weirder situations.
“How about no?” I say anyway, deciding that it’s probably better I act like I usually would. “Aren’t you with my brother, Sierra? Don’t be gross, that’s bitchboy Rob.”
Sierra rolls her eyes. I knew she would, but that’s usual for her when I make comments like this so I’m not too worried about it.
“Your brother, Evelyn, is a little too preoccupied to be worried about me,” she responds after a moment, still hanging onto Rob though her flirty demeanor has changed completely. “Bitchboy Rob here though? He’s probably got nothing but attention to pay.”
Rob is so visibly uncomfortable; It’s kind of funny to see him like that. I know I should probably help put it to an end if I want to stay on his good side though.
“Dane will have nothing but attention for you if you keep that shit up,” I retort, rolling my eyes as I motion toward her ridiculously desperate stance against Rob. “-up until the moment he kills you. And then- well, Satan can take it from there, but it’s practically the same thing.”
Sierra rolls her eyes once again, hating me more and more as I continue to block a cock she’d never even get in the first place.
“Only if you say something to him, Evelyn,” she sneers, narrowing her eyes at me as she peels herself away from Rob anyway. “He’s clearly too busy dealing with Junkette up there to see anything- but that’s okay. I’m patient… up until I’m not.”
She winks at Rob, sliding the back door open before slipping outside.
“Find out what’s going on with Jen?” Rob mouths to me as soon as the back door clicks shut.
I was already on it.
