I knew I was different,
even when I was young,
but I was young,
inexperienced.
I didn't know the right words.
Sometimes I still don't.
But I knew I was different,
I knew I was changing constantly,
like a moving river,
the way you can't step in the same river twice
or the feeling where you're standing waist deep in the ocean
and you feel the whole thing swirling around you,
moving, ebbing, flowing,
never the same,
always changing,
and you feel like you could just be swept away
but you don't think you would mind so much if you were swept up in its currents.
There are many words for it,
but my favorite word is "fluid".
"Fluid: an adjective meaning
capable of flowing freely like water,
used to describe something that can change easily or that changes often,
having or showing a smooth and easy style."
Yes, I am a fluid,
I can fit into any solid mold
but I will not keep my shape.
I can go with the flow.
I can change as easily as I need to.
I will not be confined to anything.
I don't like these molds,
so I will make new ones.
I will not be confined.
