Walking through the halls Thursday morning is no different than any other day. To my left Isaiah "Zay" Babineaux and Isadora Smackle are busy discussing Yearbook Committee.
Walking towards the lockers to my right is Farkle Minkus and Riley Matthews are talking about which flavor of ice cream from "Topanga's" is the best. Riley always chooses chocolate while Farkle picks vanilla. It's a never ending debate.
After closing my locker and making my way up the stairs, the two people I always try to avoid can be found. Maya Hart and Sarah Carpenter. Sarah is a complete gossip while Maya.. lets just say I'd rather avoid her all together. But somehow, they always stop me.
"Dylan!" Sarah calls out just before I reach the final step. I cringe before turning to face them. "Hi Sarah. Maya." I say with a fake smile on my face.
"In a hurry?" Maya asked. She tucked a strand of her honey blond hair behind her ear. I shoved my hands into the pockets of Roddi's hoodie. "Yes actually."
"Meeting with that special someone?" Sarah asked as if it was any of her business. I was about to snap back in a not so polite manner when I felt a hand on my shoulder.
"Easy there Giggles."
Maya's smile faded and Sarah turned her attention else where. I look up with a smile. "Thanks Lucas."
He smiles and makes his way over to Maya and they share a short kiss. Sarah then tries to fill him in on whatever they were talking about before I came along. Lovely.
Giggles. That nickname will forever haunt me if Lucas Friar had anything to do with it. Lucas and I were actually best friends back in Texas, and just like Maya, I hate to see Lucas get in trouble. When Lucas moved to New York he promised to keep in touch. And secretly he did. Back home, I have a box full of letters he'd send until I moved here. But sadly we don't spend much time together. He has his friends and I have mine.
When I walked through the classroom I was bombarded with hellos from my best friends Jasmine and Avery.
"We were wondering if you were even going to show up." Jasmine said taking a seat on top of a desk.
"Just a little conflict between the Juniors and I." I say setting my bag down on the floor.
"Ah yes, the juniors. The kids that can't wait to be us." Jasmine said taking out her hand mirror. She shouldn't worry so much about how she looks. She's beautiful.
"Actually, based on how my sophomore and junior years have gone, I'd say we are Seniors in a school full of Juniors." Avery said taking a seat behind me. "How am I suppose to parade my success around if these lower class men couldn't care less!"
Ah Avery. Such a smart girl and she wants everyone to know it. And she deserves it. She was accepted into Princeton as a sophomore. The girl deserves to parade!
"Enough complaining Ave. Ask Dylan about Saturday night." Jasmine said stuffing the mirror back into her purse.
Avery straighten her shoulders and gave me a pleasing smile. Oh no. Boy talk.
"Jasmine and I were wondering if you'd like to come to the movies with us on Saturday." She said looking between me and Jasmine.
"And by you and Jasmine you mean..?" I trailed off.
"Fine, Logan and Karl will be there too. But we want you to come. You're always focused on NYU." Jasmine whines. Avery nods.
"You never relax, and that's coming from me." Avery said with concern in her voice.
I open my mouth to protest but the bell rings and silences me. I guess I'll have to wait until lunch to argue about School vs Boys.
Lunchtime
"Dylan L. Moore-Alvarez!" Jasmine whines while I poke at my mashed potatoes.
"You said you'd think about it about thirteen Saturday's ago." Avery said before taking a bite of her chicken sandwich.
With complete honesty, I wouldn't mind fifth and sixth wheeling this weekend with Roddi but I have my NYU tour on Saturday morning and I have no guarantee I can be available afterwards.
"Guys I'm sorry, it's just school stuff." I say picking up my milk carton and tossing it in the trash bin behind us.
"Exactly, just school stuff." Avery says.
"And you said it as if it was NOT a big deal." Jasmine pointed out before poping a cherry tomato in her mouth.
"Okay enough you two. I can't go and that's final." I cross my arms and give them my best death glare. "End of discussion."
Jasmine shrugs and Avery sighs. "See you after school." Jasmine said as they both get up and make their ways out of the cafeteria.
Sometimes I'd rather be alone, but I'm happy to have those girls in my life. Even if all I do is push people away.
The sound of someone sitting down at the table knocks me out of my thoughts. "Hey Giggles."
I roll my eyes and slouch in my chair. "Hey there cowboy." I say looking at the guy across from me. "Shouldn't you be off with Hart it Matthews?" I ask messing with the strings connected to the hoodie.
"Meh, Riley and Maya went to get vending machine food." Lucas said unwrapping his burger.
"Ew." I said sitting up and placing my arms on the table. "I know." He responded after taking a bite.
"How's the relationship by the way?" I ask taking his sandwich from him. After he finishes chewing he groans. "You always take my burgers-" I cut him off. "Only want the pickles."
"You always take the pickles." He snaps. I smile and hand him back the sandwich. "I love you." I whine. He smirks. "Love you too Giggles."
"Lucas!" Maya calls out once she and Riley enter the cafeteria. I think I saw Lucas almost choke on his burger.
"Here we go.." I mumble and Lucas rolled his eyes. "Be nice" he mouthed.
Riley and Maya took their seats next to Lucas. Maya to the left and Riley to the right. Riley gave me a polite smile as she opened her bag of cookies. Maya linked her arm with Lucas' and opened her bag of cheese puffs.
"Hi Maya." I said actually taking a bite from my potatoes. "Dylan." She says sounding a bit uninterested in a conversation. I sigh. "Thanks for the pickles Lucas, but I think I'm going to head out." I say standing up with my tray.
"Wait, you don't normally sit here Lucas. I didn't know you two were friends." Riley said mouth full of chocolate chip.
"That reminds me of this morning.." Maya said matter of factly. "How do you know her huckleberry?" Huckleberry? Clever.
I looked from the girls to my best friend. "That," I begin, "is none of your business." Before she could respond I left the table and tossed my tray on the way out.
Jasmine and Avery walked me home and I flopped on my bed as soon as I reached my room. I can't wait for Saturday. Man, I hate high school.
