Once we got to town Maya started suggesting different places we should go to. The movies?
Nah, nothing good is out right now. Shopping? I'd rather wait until my actually birthday so I don't accidentally buy something I already have. Roller skating? Visit some of the town horses?

We finally gave up and walked into Al's Diner and took a seat at the counter.

"Why didn't you suggest this place first if it's originally where you wanted to go?" Maya asked.

I shrugged. I can't say I came here for the food.

A moment later a worker walked over to our section and I knew it was the exact person that was missing.

"Well hey there Doll."

I smiled and Maya gave me a puzzled look.

"Maya this is Maybelline. She's Roddi's girlfriend." I explained.

"Hey, hey!" She hushed me. "We aren't officially together so don't go saying things like that."

I could hear her mumble under her breath, "You'd be the one to jinx it."

A couple minutes pass and Maybelline gives us out two chocolate milkshakes. She then comes around from behind the counter.

"So, what's new Dolly?"

Maybelline is sorta like my Josh except she's in the place of Lucas.. if that makes any since. I'll try to break it down. While I've always had him, Roddi always had her. But how I've been acting naive.. Roddi had to work to get Maybelline because she didn't think much of him. But she deeply cares. Roddi usually comes to her with Mom problems and she usually tells him life isn't very fun around here with him miles away.

Maya excused herself saying Dad was blowing up her phone.

I tell Maybelline about everything that has happened since we last talked.. even about my fight a couple of days ago.

"Wait, slow down. Who this Josh boy?" Maybelline said. "He must be pretty important to piss off little old Lucas."

I blush and then sigh. "He's my boyfriend."

Maybelline crosses her arms. "You don't seem so happy about that."

I raise my hands in protest. "It's not like that. I really like him.. but,"

"But what?" Maybelline cuts me off.

I run my fingers through my hair.

"Lucas told me that Maya is in love with Josh.."

Maybelline raises her eyebrows and shakes her head. "And?"

I move my straw around in my glass. "Josh and I are good for each other but, I don't want Maya to be unhappy because of me. She's my family now."

"Now and forever." Said Maybelline. "Josh chose you. Yes it will sting in the beginning, but eventually she'll move on." She started to walk away as Maya was coming back from the bathroom.

She called out, "No matter what, family is family!"

Walking home was unbearable. I didn't want to upset Maya by bringing Josh up but every few minutes she's ask if something was wrong. I tell her no but she wasn't having any of it.

"Look Dylan, I have Riley for a best friend. I know when things aren't okay." Maya said stopping in front of the porch.

"I don't want to make it a big deal but it is." I said awkwardly rubbing my arm.

"Well if you want to talk about it," She sat down on the steps. "I'm here to listen."

I took a deep breath and sat down next to her.

"You know I'm dating Josh." I started.

"Uh huh."

"And I know you're like in love with him.. and I just don't want you upset."

"You think I'm upset about your relationship with Josh?"

I lean back on the step. "I dunno are you?"

Maya shrugged. "At first, yes. But it doesn't seem to bother me much recently."

I sit up and place my elbows on my knees and lay my chin in my hands. "Recently?"

Maya tilted her head.

"What happened recently?"

She began to blush and I started laughing.

"Fine.. you can't tell Dad."

I pretend to zip my lips.

"You know.. Farkle right?"

I nod.

"We've kinda have started talking."

I gasp. "No way."

She slaps my arm. "Don't act surprised."

"Well, I dunno never would have thought of that."

"You saying there's something wrong with me and Farkle?"

"Want me to stop dating Josh?"

"No."

"Then no." I stretched and stood up. "Come on."

She looked at my hand and scrunched up her face. "What?

"Dinner is done, I can smell it from out here."

I helped her up and we went inside. Wow, that's one hell of a way to spend Christmas Eve.
