I was still hugging Luke when my phone vibrated in my pocket. Unhooking one arm from him I reached my phone out.
from Savannah
court & tamzin have just come back in & are going to the kitchen now!
Literally the second after I read the text I looked up and made eye-contact with Courtney. Great. My good mood evaporated instantly as I untangled myself from Luke. ‘Jenna. We need to leave. Now.’ I breathed a sigh of relief that she hadn’t said something horrible to Luke. I barely whispered ‘Bye’ in his direction as we left.
We walked out of the house. ‘I’ll get my mom to pick us up.’ Courtney said calling her mom. It was freezing out here! When Courtney had finished talking to her mom I said ‘Do we have to stand out here? I’m frozen.’ In a whiny voice.
‘Yes, because some people are purposely trying to ruin their lives in there!’ Courtney said frowning at me. Savannah rolled her eyes and gave me a sympathetic look, if only she could have texted me quicker. Tamzin had barely looked at me since Courtney practically ordered us to leave, she always tried her best to stay on her good side. I used to do that too. Maybe I still should. It would make my life so much easier. I just couldn’t help but noticing that I still had butterflies in my stomach from kissing Luke. I desperately wanted to smile, but I knew I couldn’t since Courtney would probably rip my face off if I did.
We got in Courtney’s mom’s car when she showed up after a few minutes. Courtney sat in the front seat and the rest of us got in the back. It was nice to have some distance between us. ‘Mom, can Jenna stay over tonight?’ What the fuck was she doing?! I did not want to be alone with Courtney tonight! ‘Sure, that’s fine.’ Great. Ugh. Vannie squeezed my arm supportively and gave me a small smile.
Courtney’s mom dropped off Vannie and Tamzin at their houses and after a while we got to Courtney’s. We went straight up to Courtney’s room. I sat on the edge of her bed and she sat at the other end. She exhaled sharply through her nose ‘are you trying to ruin your life Jen?’ she said sounding irritated.
‘No.’ I replied simply.
‘Well you’re doing a very good job at it. Can you imagine what would have happened if anyone important would have seen what you did? Are you trying to become some sort of geeky loser or something?’ I didn’t know what to say so I just kept quiet.
‘I don’t even understand you, Jenna. You had literally the most popular guy in school as your boyfriend and then you go and break up with him and start going after complete social retards. You could do so much better than whatever that piece of shit you were kissing is. I need you to promise me that you’ll stay away from him. I don’t want anyone’s reputation to get hurt in this.’
She’s acting like she’s doing me a favour by telling me to never even speak to Luke again. Why does she even care who I like, she’s my friend shouldn’t she just want me to be happy?
‘I don’t know if I can promise that.’ I replied truthfully.
‘You will seriously regret ruining your life over this idiot, Jen. I promise.’ she shut up after that. After a few minutes she was asleep. That went a lot less painfully than I expected.
