Chapter 40: Delirious

(Y/n) shifted uneasily from one foot to the other. It was the next day, and she was going through another test run for her wings. Power Loader promised he checked and re-checked everything Mei did to them and kept a close eye on her, but that didn't keep (Y/n)'s stomach from twisting into knots.

"(Y/n), there's someone I'd like you to meet." Power Loader announced. A man with scruffy blonde hair and orange goggles smiled at her, holding his hand out to shake hers. (Y/n) was most mesmerized by the scarlet red wings protruding from his back.

"Wow! You're Hawks! I've watched so many of your rescue clips, you're amazing!" (Y/n) exclaimed, shaking his hand.

"Hey kid. I've heard a lot about you from Tokoyami when he interned for me a week ago." Hawks grinned. "He had a lot to say."

"Really? Oh gosh, he must have told you so many embarrassing stories." (Y/n) buried her face in her hands.

"Actually, quite the opposite. All he had to say were good things. Well, I mean he mentioned you, then Dark Shadow chimed in and started talking about you. You matched up exactly to how he described you." Hawks chuckled.

"And how exactly did he describe me?"

"Smart, cute, funny, innocent at times, and very helpful. He also mentioned how good of a nurse you were."

"Aww really? That's so sweet!" (Y/n) cooed.

"Okay, let's get on with this test run. (Y/n), I modified your pack so it uses anti-gravity technology to keep you airborne. There are anti-gravity parts that Mei added to these boots." Power Loader handed (Y/n) the equipment and she slipped it on.

"I saw Mei use boots like these at the Sports Festival. They seemed to work pretty well." (Y/n) noted.

"Yeah, she wanted to add something extra to say sorry for nearly making you crash and burn yesterday." Power Loader rolled his eyes from under his helmet. "Hawks will be flying alongside you today to make sure you don't spiral out of control."

"Cool. Same thing as yesterday?" (Y/n) asked. The pro nodded.

She went through the steps again and soon, she was rising off the ground. She tilted her body so she was parallel with the ground again.

"You're doing great kid. Follow my lead." Hawks banked right, and (Y/n) followed. He took her through some simple movements, even doing a loop in the air.

"Okay (Y/n), bring it in for now. This time, lean back as you approach the ground so the wings will know you want to land." Power Loader instructed. (Y/n)'s stomach dropped at this point. She spiraled over the landing pad and slowly, she descended to the ground. When she landed, she fell to her knees, as they were too wobbly to support her.

"That was great for your second time around (Y/n), I'm impressed." Hawks flashed her a thumbs up and a grin.

"Thanks. It was nice working with you sir. What days should we practice on?" (Y/n) asked.

"I'm free Friday if you are after school."

"Yeah, totally!"

"Cool. See you then kid."

He raised his wings above his head and shot into the sky, his wings beating rhythmically.

"I can see why Tokoyami likes her." he chuckled to himself. After a few moments, he disappeared into the distance.

(Y/n) struggled to keep her eyes open. Taking another swig of her tea, she stared blankly at the page before her. She had been trying to read the same damn paragraph over and over for half an hour now.
