At the laundromat, my comforter is sitting on top of a row of machines, still soaking wet. Some jerk took it out of the machine and used our time to dry his own clothes.

This unrelated atrocity, it turns out, is the final straw. I'm done. I'm irrationally irritated by the dryer theft. I don't even know why.

I walk over to the change machine and slide in two $1 bills. Growing more defiant by the second. I grab my quarters and march over to Penny, who is on high alert guarding the only open dryer.

"Here." I shove the quarters into her hand. "Can you stay with the comforter? There's something I've got to do. I'll be back to get you."

"Wait? Sam, what are you gonna do?"

"Please, Pen. I've got to do it now. Before I lose my nerve again."

"Do what?" The concern in her voice is palpable.

"Break up with Jake." I hug her. And, I'm on my way out the door, before she can try to talk me out of it.

"Hey Sam," she yells after me. "Be careful."
